Job description

The computing sytems are the backbone of our modern society. From professional work to personal activities, we are powered up by all sorts of information systems, such as cloud and edge systems. It is of paramount importance that the future information systems deliver high and realiable performance  in an energy/cost  efficiency manner. Working in this multidisciplinary field at TU Delft, you will contribute to the key information system of our society as a whole. As our scope expands rapidly, the Distributed System Group (D) of TU Delft’s Computer Science Department has various openings for assistant professors. Or, if you aspire to a more senior role, you could join us as an associate professor.

You will strengthen the research portfolio in Distributed Systems Section, TU Delft, conduct advanced research in the broad areas of distributed information systems, to acquire research funding, and to transfer knowledge to external parties. The candidate is expected to teach bachelor and master courses in English and supervise MSc and PhD students. 

In addition, you will build your team of PhD students, whom you’ll supervise and coach to completion. You will also teach our top-level international Bachelor and Master students, and supervise their graduation projects. Playing an active role in our committees and the scientific community, you will transfer knowledge and help strengthen our Faculty, Department and Research Group. At DS, you’ll join an internationally diverse , twenty team of highly motivated women and men: PhD students, post-docs and Assistant, Associate and Full Professors. Requirements

Applicants must have a PhD degree in the broad field of computer systems, a proven track record of research excellence, the ambition to strengthen and expand the research and teaching of the Distributed Systems group, a team player mentality, and good communication and social skills. Preferably, the successful candidate has experience in teaching at the university level. Depending on experience and track record, an appointment at the Associate Professor level is possible.     

Applicants must hold a doctorate in computer science or in the related areas, an internationally recognized research record and have strong teaching skills. They have an internationally visible research profile in the following subfields (but not limited to):

  • Decentralized information systems
  • Federated learning systems
  • Privacy preserving data systems
  • Dependability and resource management
  • System for AI
  • Cloud-edge systems
  • Blockchain system

Starting date:  August 1st, 2023 or upon agreement.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 6 years.

The vacancies are at the level of assistant professor (Tenure track) or associate professor, depending on background, experience and leadership(potential).

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. Besides the salary you also receive an annual holiday payment of 8% and an end of year bonus payment of 8.3%. The TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, a discount on health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged.

  • Salary scale 13-14: € 5.506,-- to € 7.362,-- per month gross (associate professor position)

Faculty Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) brings together three disciplines - electrical engineering, mathematics and computer science. Combined, they reinforce each other and are the driving force behind the technology we use in our daily lives. Technology such as the electricity grid, which our faculty is helping to make future-proof. We are also working on a world in which humans and computers reinforce each other. We are mapping out disease processes using single cell data, and using mathematics to simulate gigantic ash plumes after a volcanic eruption. There is plenty of room here for ground-breaking research. We educate innovative engineers and have excellent labs and facilities that underline our strong international position. The Delft Distributed Systems
The Distributed Systems group (http://www.ds.ewi.tudelft.nl), under the leadership of Dr. Lydia Chen, performs world-class research in the design, implementation, deployment, and analysis of large-scale, Internet-based. It currently has three research lines: decentralized machine learning systems (e.g., federated learning),  privacy and resilience distributed systems  (e.g., in networks and clouds), and cooperative systems (e.g., blockchain technology). Its research is fundamental, aimed at the design and develop of new generic concepts in algorithms, systems software, and application-driven, motivated by important application areas.

The Departments Intelligent Systems and Software Technology
The Departments of Intelligent Systems (INSY) and Software Technology (ST) together constitute one of the leading Dutch departments in research and academic education in computer science, employing over 300 people. Together, they are responsible for the curriculum of the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in Computer Science as well as the Master’s programme in Embedded Systems. The inspiration for its research topics is largely derived from technical ICT problems in industry and society related to cybersecurity, computer graphics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, multimedia retrieval, large-scale distributed processing, embedded systems, algorithmics, programming languages, software engineering, and web-based information systems.
