As junior lecturer you will be involved in various teaching-related, and organizational activities, and will work together with coordinators, lecturers and other junior lecturers that are active in the courses of the existing curriculum. We are specifically looking for candidates who have a strong affinity with all aspects related to the field of Systems Biology, including programming, molecular & cell biology, mathematics, machine learning, quantitative data analysis and computational modelling.

You will be encouraged to develop your personal professional academic teaching skills and to build a portfolio to prepare for various career paths. To this end, you will have the opportunity to acquire the "basic teaching qualification" at the university level (UTQ or BKO) and follow relevant teaching modules provided by the Teaching & Learning Center.

The junior lecturer position -ideally suitable for starting lecturers- is placed both (50%:50%) at the Amsterdam Institute of Molecular and Life Sciences (VU, secretary) and the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences (UvA, host location) and is immediately available with a start somewhere in Spring 2023. Your daily supervisors will be prof. dr. Frank Bruggeman (VU) and dr. Marten Postma (UvA).

Your duties

The junior lecturer will be expected to:

• be actively involved in curriculum and course development and teaching that are part of the systems biology track;
• contribute to the development of academic skills and community-building activities in courses and internships;
• initiate and participate in innovation projects to further improve teaching quality in the programme;
• contribute to promotional activities and admission procedures of the programme;
• assist in coordination and administrative tasks of the masters' programme.
  

The candidate must have completed a Master's degree related to Systems Biology, Quantitative Biology, Computational Biology, Computational Science, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics or Mathematical biology. Candidates who have completed or are close to completing a PhD in the same area, are particularly encouraged to apply for this position.
In addition, the candidate

• is fluent in English;
• has strong oral and written communication skills;
• possesses good organizational skills;
• is proactive and able to work independently and in a team;
• can work with diverse international students;
• has affinity with and potential for teaching;
• experience as a teaching assistant or comparable work experience is a pre;
• has skills in mathematics, and scientific programming in R and Python.
  

Fixed-term contract: 4 years.

A challenging position in a socially involved organization. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €2,960 (scale 10)
and a maximum €4,670 (scale 10), depending on your education and experience. The job profile: is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for 1 FTE.

A full Junior Lecturer Trajectory is 4 years and 2 months probation, and cannot be extended beyond this period. This position therefore does not lead to permanent employment.
