The Department of Legal Methods has an opening for an Assistant Professor (Universitair Docent) or a Lecturer, preferably a senior Lecturer (Lecturer 3 or 2). The Assistant Professor will be involved in teaching and research activities, the Lecturer will be focusing on teaching. For the appointment as an Assistant Professor a finished PhD is required. This requirement does not apply for the appointment as Lecturer. However, experience in research is seen as an advantage.

The prospective Assistant Professor / Lecturer will teach and coordinate various courses in bachelor and master programmes. The courses concern introductory courses in law, such as Law and Legal Skills: the Dutch Example. In this course, students are introduced in the major areas of law and legal skills. If language skills allow, the Assistant Professor / Lecturer will also be involved in introductory courses in Dutch, such as Algemene Rechtswetenschap 1 and Algemene Rechtswetenschap 2. If language skills allow, the Assistant Professor / Lecturer will also be involved in teaching and coordinating courses in Dutch concerning methods and methodology in legal research. These courses concern doctrinal legal research, empirical legal research and master thesis writing.

The Assistant Professor will conduct research within the department of Legal Methods. Research expertise and interests preferably lie in one or more of the following three research areas which play a central role in the research at the department: (1) public order and safety, (2) housing rights and law and (3) methods and methodology in legal research. The Assistant Professor may participate in the research of the ERC project EVICT on the right to housing, evictions and data science. This project is coordinated by professor Michel Vols within the department (see http://www.eviction.eu).

The Assistant Professor is expected to successfully undertake research: publish (peer-reviewed) journal articles and books (chapters), organise and participate in conferences, and write grant proposals to acquire research funding. The Assistant Professor is also expected to fulfil a coordinating and/or pioneering role in the research group. This may include (co-)supervising PhD and (research) master’s students.

Department of Legal Methods
The Assistant Professor / Lecturer will become a member of the Department of Legal Methods, a vibrant and relatively young legal multidisciplinary department at the faculty of law of the University of Groningen. This Department provides bachelor’s and master’s education. It conducts research in various fields of law, such as public order law and the right to housing, and it also conducts research into methods and methodology of legal research.

We are looking for candidates who meet the following qualifications:

- for the appointment as an Assistant Professor: a (nearly) finished PhD in law
- for the appointment as a Lecturer: research experience would be preferred
- possession of a basic university teaching qualification or preparedness to acquire this qualification within a reasonable timeframe
- ample experience in providing and coordinating courses at university level
- expertise in one or more of the research areas of the Department of Legal Methods would be strongly preferred
- experience in writing research proposals and attracting external research funding would be strongly preferred
- an emerging national and/or international network
- fluency in English
- the ability to teach in Dutch would be strongly preferred
- ability to work both individually and as part of a team
- demonstrable competences: planning and organising, conceptual capacity, presenting, monitoring, flexibility, independent, analytical skills.

Fixed-term contract: 18 months.

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:

- a salary, depending on qualifications and work experience, with a minimum of € 3,974 (scale 11.0, Assistant Professor 2 or Lecturer 3) and a maximum salary of € 6,181 (scale 12.0, Assistant Professor 1 or Lecturer 2) gross a month on a full-time basis in accordance with your experience
- a holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income and an 8.3% year-end bonus
- temporary position of 0.8-1.0 FTE (80%-100%) for the period of 18 months with the option of a permanent employment. Prolongation of the contract is contingent on sufficient progress in the first 18 months.
