Assistant professor Social Transitions and Behavioral Change, for the scientific area: Social and behavioral sciences, duration of employment contract: 18 months, followed by tenure.

Job description

We are seeking enthusiastic colleagues for two positions of Assistant professor to strengthen our interdisciplinary research with a focus on Social Transitions and Behavioral Change. 

The increasing need for investigating complex societal problems more integrally requires expertise that crosses the boundaries of a specific academic discipline. At the Tilburg School of  Social and Behavioral  Sciences (TSB) of Tilburg University, we aim to connect the expert knowledge, experience, and related research networks of the research groups in close collaboration with the School’s Herbert Simon Research Institute to obtain interdisciplinary knowledge that will increase the understanding of the well-being of individuals, teams, organizations, and society and their ability to adapt to a dynamic living and working environment. Our interdisciplinary research addresses topical themes in need of both fundamental and applied interdisciplinary research and combines knowledge and insights from a selective group of disciplines: cognitive and neuropsychology, developmental and forensic psychology, medical and clinical psychology, social psychology, health sciences, human resources management, organization & management, sociology, methodology and statistics, and data science.

Our School invests in the research themes of Mental disorders, Social transitions and behavioral change, and Social inequality and diversity. To further strengthen the Social transitions and behavioral change research theme, and give the interdisciplinary research within our School a strong boost we seek to appoint two assistant professors, one of whom will be embedded in the Department of Organization Studies and the other in the Department of Medical and Clinical Psychology.

Working as an Assistant professor will involve developing your own research ideas and activities, which are related to the research theme Social transitions and behavioral change fitting your expertise. Together with the other team members that are working on the same research theme, you will define the joint research program and develop a network in and outside the School and university (team science). 
In addition to research, you will be involved in teaching in either the field of Organization and Management Studies or Medical and Clinical Psychology. This comprises coordinating courses, providing lectures as well as working groups, supervising students in various activities in our programs, and thesis supervision. You will perform your teaching tasks in consultation with the head of department.

For Medical and Clinical Psychology
Members of the department teach in the following programs:  Bachelor Psychology, Master Clinical Psychology, Master Medical Psychology, Research Master Individual Differences and Assessment). A positive motivation for teaching and an inspiring and motivating attitude towards students is therefore necessary.  The tasks in the current vacancy are to teach primarily in Dutch, but also in English. Proficiency in both Dutch and English is therefore required.

For Organization Studies 
Members of the department teach in the following programs: Bachelor Organisatiewetenschappen, Master Organization Studies, Bachelor Global Management of Social Issues, Master track Global Management of Social Issues, and Research Master Social and Behavioral Sciences of the Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences (TSB). The educational tasks in the this vacancy are, depending on your profile, to teach, in Dutch or in English, in the academic programs involving the Department of Organization Studies, e.g. in the courses Introduction to Organization Studies, Organization Theory, Strategic Decision-Making, Organizational Behavior, and Wicked Problems (click here for an overview of our programs and courses).

Requirements

  • (In the last phase of obtaining a) Ph.D. degree in one of the social or behavioral sciences
  • Affinity with interdisciplinary research, you want to bring your ideas to life within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Proven research expertise, visible through either publications in international high-quality scientific journals or at least an ambitious pipeline of (submitted) papers and contributions to academic conferences  and experience with open science.
  • The willingness to write grant proposals for prestigious granting institutions (e.g., Dutch National Scientific Foundation (NWO), European Research Council (ERC)).
  • Demonstration of scientific integrity.
  • Experience and affinity with teaching.
  • The willingness to acquire the Basic University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) of Tilburg University, if not obtained a similar qualification already.
  • Proficiency in English (CEFR: C2 level); proficiency in Dutch (obligatory for the position at the Department of Medical and Clinical Psychology).
  • Personal leadership: you take responsibility for your work and career and possess a good level of self-knowledge;  
  • Team spirit: you feel part of a team and express this through collaboration, sharing knowledge and experiences, and contributing to an open and inclusive work environment;.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 18 months, followed by tenure.

This is a vacancy for a permanent position You will be given a temporary employment contract for the duration of 18 months. After this period, when your suitability for the position has been proven, you will receive tenure. 
This is a position for 0,8 – 1,0 FTE (32 – 40 hours per week). 
The salary amounts to a minimum of €3.974 and a maximum of €6.181 gross per month for full-time employment, based on UFO profile Assistant professor and salary scale 11-12 of the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten).

Department of Medical and Clinical Psychology
The department consists of a group of close-knit, enthusiastic researchers whose motivation is to improve the quality of life of people with psychological and/or somatic complaints. 
Our research mainly focuses on which lifestyles on the one hand and which personality traits on the other are associated with psychological, somatic, or psychosomatic complaints, and through which psychological or biological mechanisms this occurs. We also look at how we can influence those mechanisms to be able to prevent the complaints (prevention) or reduce them in frequency and/or intensity (treatment).
Our unique combination of medical and clinical psychology in one department allows us to fulfill our objective (improving the quality of life of people with psychological and/or somatic complaints) and therefore be of great social value.
