Job description

The Paediatric Anaesthesia Fellowship at Amalia Children's Hospital in Nijmegen (The Netherlands) and at UZ Leuven (Belgium) is a twelve months education and training program in all aspects of paediatric anaesthesia. The clinical and didactic education curriculum includes paediatric pain management and perioperative anaesthetic care for neonates, infants, children and adolescents both in the operating room and in remote locations. Fellows work under staff supervision in the provision of anaesthetic care.

Fellows are expected to take an active role in educational activities, clinical and basic science research when appropriate. According to your level of training and experience, you will gain independence and responsibility for supervision of anaesthesia trainees in both departments.

Fellows need to demonstrate proficiency in perioperative management of patients, including appropriate preoperative assessment, investigations, technical and procedural skills, clinical judgement and decision-making and postoperative care.

The role and responsibilities of a fellow are:

Clinical
The standard workweek is Monday to Friday. You are expected to be available from 07.30 -18.00 hours each day. Preparation for complex cases in the operating room may require earlier attendance so that the case will commence at the booked time. You may not commence an anesthetic without first consulting with your staff supervisor. Inpatients must be seen pre-operatively and problems discussed with staff the day before surgery. Pain
You will participate in the acute pain service.

Education
Each fellow is expected to develop skills as an educator by teaching residents, medical students or other allied health professionals; organizing and moderating problem based learning discussions or journal clubs, and creating and delivering lectures. You will be expected to attend the following;
  • National anaesthesia congress.
  • International anaesthesia congress
  • APLS course, and good clinical practice course.
Research
Active participation in departmental research or quality assurance projects is expected and encouraged. Additional research time may be available, based on demonstrated need. It is the expectation of the department that fellows will produce work to be presented at national or international congresses. Certification of having completed good clinical practice course is required for all study investigators.

On calls

The on call commitment differs between institutions. In Leuven you will not be asked to take part in the on call rota. In Nijmegen you will start doing on calls after a period of time. You will be supervised by one of the paediatric anaesthesia consultants. The on-call fellow will have clinical responsibilities the day following on call. On-call frequency is expected to be 1
in 8.

Trauma

The anaesthesia fellow's main responsibility is airway management, but assistance in all other aspects trauma management may be required.

Requirements

Those who are interested in a fellowship in paediatric anaesthesia are encouraged to apply, especially when interested in combining this programme with training in chronic pain.

Applicants should have completed their basic anaesthesia training and be on the national specialist register (MSRC). Furthermore we are looking for a fellow who:
  • Has effective and clear ways of communication with different kinds of target groups (patients of different ages, family members, colleagues, residents, students and other allied health professionals).
  • Effectively works in a (multidisciplinary) team at virtually all times in different settings.
  • Is able to manage and use resources in a good way.
  • Is interested in the domain of healthcare improvement.
  • Is able to demonstrate appropriate professional behaviour, amongst others:
    • Fulfilling on call commitments, being punctual, reliable and responsible, and prepared for the cases.
    • Fulfil role as junior staff by active participation of the care of the paediatric patient with appropriate preoperative preparation, intraoperative management and postoperative follow up.
    • Recognises personal limitations and seek appropriate consultation as necessary.shows consideration in the ethical aspects of patient care (for instance consent in the Jehovah's witness population).
    • Delivers the highest quality of care with compassion, honesty and integrity.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 1 year with a possible extension.

The fellowship programme runs for twelve months and offers the possibility of spending up to six months of that time in Leuven University Medical Centre in Belgium, which is a national referral centre for paediatric cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery and liver transplantation.

The Department of Anaesthesia at Radboud University Medical Centre offers a position as fellow in paediatric anaesthesia. Amalia Children's Hospital, as part of Radboudumc is one of the dedicated children's hospitals in the country.

We are a tertiary referral centre for urology, rare gastrointestinal congenital diseases, cranial and maxillo facial reconstruction. Neonates diagnosed with congenital diaphragmatic hernia are operated in our institution, and we offer round the clock ECMO service. Gastroenterology, ophthalmology, plastic surgery, ENT, Radiology, neurosurgery and orthopaedic surgery are other specialties that demand regular input from our department.

Radboudums is a dedicated trauma and burns centre. In addition, children with chronic pain are treated in collaboration with pain specialists of the Radboudumc Expertise centre for Pain and Palliative Medicine (REPPG). In the near future we would like to expand our activities in paediatric chronic pain.

Leuven University Medical Centre is a leading institutions at national and international level and national referral centre for paediatric cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery and liver transplantation. During the six months in Leuven you will spend time in the busy Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (up to three months). Theatre time will focus in particular on specialties.
