Do you have scientific interest in the societally relevant field of nonlinear analysis of damage and failure behaviour of civil engineering structures?

Job description

Civil structures need to be safe and reliable. Meanwhile, loading of these structures is increasing, structures are ageing and suffer from environmental influences (weathering, but also ground movements). The adequate analysis of nonlinear damage and failure behaviour of civil engineering structures is therefore an important research field, requiring robust, efficient and reliable nonlinear computational methods to be applied at the large-scale structural level in a parametric setting. In this field you will focus on (i) robust constitutive models and advanced and fast nonlinear solution procedures for quasi-brittle failures, (ii) integrating them with validation testing and structural monitoring, and (iii) combining them with probabilistic analysis and reliability at the large-scale structural level. You will develop and apply such models for the serviceability limit state (damage, cracking) and the ultimate limit state (collapse) of newly to be designed, existing or retrofitted structures.

Close cooperation with partners in knowledge institutions, other scientific partners and industry is important. The tenure track includes publishing in peer reviewed journal papers, acquiring funding for research (industry, EU and NWO) and contributing to courses on MSc and/or BSc level.

The position in Structural Mechanics is located within the department Materials, Mechanics, Management & Design (3MD). 3MD focuses on the design, mechanics, materials and management of civil infrastructures and buildings. A multi-scale research approach is followed, starting at micro-scale (materials), to meso-scale (structures) and to macro-scale (infrastructures/systems). The department governs the entire life cycle from develop, design, build, maintain, operate to demolish or reuse. The department has strong competences in modelling and design for both civil infrastructures as well as buildings. This provides the opportunity to bring computational modelling and mechanics in contact with the materials micro-lab, the Stevin structures lab and with structural design.

You can, through your research, management skills and teaching qualities, inspire co-workers and students alike. Our future colleague is expected to establish a strong, externally funded research programme and is committed to excel in teaching Structural Mechanics at undergraduate (Dutch or English) as well as graduate level (English).

Furthermore:

  • You hold a master degree in civil or structural engineering, as well as a PhD and additional experience in a postdoctoral or industrial position.
  • You enjoy working in a team, like to work in a cooperative and amicable environment and possess good organisational and communication skills.
  • You must be proficient in spoken and written English. International applicants are encouraged to acquire knowledge of Dutch. 

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 1.5 years.
