What are you going to do?

• You will provide education in a dynamic and international context, with ample opportunities for the development of innovative teaching methods, also outside of the classroom;
• You will develop your own line of research in climate change and EU economic law and governance;
• You will actively participate in the Amsterdam School for Regional, Transnational and European Studies (ARTES), a research community that combines humanities and social science-based approaches to the study of Europe and other world regions with a strong interest in the politics of national and transnational cultural manifestations, in cross-border, transregional and transnational networks and interconnections, and in historical and contemporary diasporas and migration;
• You will teach in the BA and MA programmes in European Studies.

Tasks and responsibilities:

• designing and conducting independent research at the intersection of climate change and EU economic law and governance (including, but not limited to, internal market law or EU trade law);
• actively pursuing external funding for research, notably funding from research councils, national as well as European;
• actively contributing to and developing national and international research networks and other forms of cooperation;
• actively contributing to the interdisciplinary research activities of the Amsterdam School for Regional, Transnational and European Studies, the Amsterdam Centre for European Studies, as well as of the University wide Research Priority Area on the Energy Transition and Sustainable Development Goals https://www.uva.nl/en/shared-content/zwaartepunten/en/energy-transition-through-the-lens-of-sustainable-developments-goals/enlens.html;
• developing, coordinating and teaching courses on internal market law or EU trade law more broadly and EU climate change law more specifically in the BA and MA programmes of European Studies, also in interdisciplinary collaboration;
• developing, coordinating and teaching core courses in the law major and contributing to general core courses in European Studies;
• supervising BA and MA theses and tutoring students; co-supervising PhD dissertations;
• actively contributing to the development and improvement of the broader teaching programmes in the department;
• taking part in committees and working groups and carrying out departmental administrative tasks as directed.

You are an intellectually curious researcher with an inter-disciplinary research profile and an international academic network. Your publications show expertise in the field of EU climate change law and more broadly EU economic law and governance. Your research will add to and complement existing work on climate change and the Anthropocene in the Amsterdam School for Regional, Transnational and European Studies (ARTES), adding a legal perspective to the work of historians, geographers, and political economists. You will develop and provide modules on climate change and economic law and governance at the BA and MA levels. You show flexibility in teaching topics beyond your own research focus, a willingness to work in interdisciplinary teams of teachers, and the ability to offer inspiring lectures and tutorials in the BA, MA and Law minor programmes to an international community of students. You are committed to fostering an inclusive classroom.

Your experience and profile:

• you hold a PhD in EU law, with a research focus on EU economic law and governance as related to climate change;
• you either have, or show clear potential for, developing a strong publication record commensurate with the stage of your academic career;
• strong organisational experience and skills and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary and diverse team;
• an international academic network in the research area concerned;
• ability and ambition to obtain external research and/or project grants;
• experience with research-led teaching in a higher education context and a strong commitment to personal development in teaching;
• experience with digital teaching facilities and affinity with IT in university teaching;
• willingness to take an active part in the administrative and collegial life of the department;
• strong command of both Dutch and English. If you are not a native Dutch speaker, an active and passive command of Dutch must be acquired within two years of the employment contract (the state examination for Dutch as a Second Language programme II must be passed);
• a Dutch Basic Teaching Qualification, or a willingness to acquire one within the first two years of your appointment.

We offer permanent employment upon a satisfactory evaluation following a temporary employment contract of a maximum of 18 months with a probationary period of two months. If you already have an employment contract with the UvA, we offer permanent employment upon a satisfactory evaluation following a temporary employment contract of a maximum of 12 months. The employment is for 38 hours per week. Preferred starting date is 1 August 2023.

The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week, ranges between €3,974 (scale 11) to €6,181 (scale 12) gross per month, based on 38 hours per week, dependent on relevant experience. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance. A favourable tax agreement, the '30% ruling', may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
