Job description

DIAM is proud to invite applications for an Assistant Professor (Development Track) position in integrative data science with focus on health. We welcome candidates engaged in all aspects of data science, with preference on applications in health disciplines. The Assistant Professor will be appointed at the Faculty of EEMCS, in Delft Institute of Applied Mathematics, in the Applied Probability group.

With this position, you will be part to the national ‘RECENTRE: Risk-based lifEstyle Change: daily-lifE moNiToring and Recommendations’ program, funded by the 4TU.Federation. Within RECENTRE, the aim is to empower patients to play a leading role in their lifestyle and health within their own environment. Integrated smart sensor systems and dynamic risk profiles will be designed to support high patient engagement.  This can lead to personalized adaptive recommendations with considerable potential for adoption and lifestyle change. To get authentic and up-to date risk profiles, sensor and historic data will be complemented by expert and patient subjective assessments, as well as by patient personal information.  Novel methods will be consequently needed to integrate these disparate data sources.

With our large consortium, we are connecting the four universities of technology in The Netherlands (Delft University of Technology, Eindhoven University of Technology, University of Twente and Wageningen University and Research) with multiple clinical, patient and knowledge organizations. DIAM is part of the RECENTRE consortium and will provide the know-how on employing expert judgment methods and on developing methods to integrate disparate data sources for risk profiling patients in view of life-style changes. Tina Nane will coordinate DIAM’s contributions, and Dorota Kurowicka will also be involved in the project.

We offer a full-time position, but candidates preferring a part-time position are also explicitly invited to apply. Our new colleague will have demonstrated excellence in research and preferably have some experience in teaching and supervision of students. The responsibilities include:

  • Contribute to the RECENTRE programme.
  • Setting up a successful research programme with focus on health.
  • Acquiring and managing externally funded projects.
  • Participating in our teaching programme, which includes service teaching for engineering students.

You will also be responsible for teaching and supervising students and interns at various levels (Bachelor, Master and PhD).

The Development Track is a process leading up to a permanent appointment with the prospect of becoming an Associate Professor. It offers young, talented academics a clear and attractive career path. During the Development Track, you will have the opportunity to develop into an internationally acknowledged and recognised academic. We offer a coordinated career and personal development programme designed to offer academics as much support as feasible.

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) brings together three disciplines - electrical engineering, mathematics and computer science. Combined, they reinforce each other and are the driving force behind the technology we use in our daily lives. Technology such as the electricity grid, which our faculty is helping to make future-proof. We are also working on a world in which humans and computers reinforce each other. We are mapping out disease processes using single cell data, and using mathematics to simulate gigantic ash plumes after a volcanic eruption.
