Will you help us to develop a miniaturized OCT system to monitor the growth and function of organs on a chip?

Job description

Organs on Chip have the potential to revolutionize drug development and disease modelling, and the Netherlands is at the forefront of this technology in terms of business and academic knowledge. However, lack of industry standards currently prohibit the integration of technological and biological building blocks from different manufacturers. In this project we will work on the development of Optical Coherence Tomography based on integrated photonics platforms (iOCT) in order to develop tools to visualize the organ on chip (OoC). We will develop new analysis tools to monitor changes in the structure as well as the physiological properties of the organ on chip.

The project will be a collaboration with university and industrial partners in the Netherlands. Within this consortium different demonstrators will be built and validated. In our part of the project, we will work closely together with the Biomedical Photonics Imaging group at the University of Twente and Lionix International. The task of the PhD student will design and validate experimental setups, help advance theoretical efforts and their experimental validation.

About your role
You will work as a PhD student for 4 years within the national 'groeifonds' program NxtGen HighTech in the project "Organ on a chip".

In this project, you will work on the development of OCT on a photonic integrated circuit and develop analysis methods based on fundamental aspects of the interaction of light with organs on a chip. This project will result in several peer reviewed publications, presentations at (inter)national conferences and normally in a PhD degree.

Amsterdam UMC

You will work in the department of Biomedical Engineering & Physics headed by Ton van Leeuwen, and supervised by Dirk Faber and Xavier Attendu. The research at the biomedical optics group is based on the physics of the interaction of light with tissue to obtain quantitative functional and molecular information of tissue. Based on this knowledge, the development and clinical evaluation of optical imaging and analysis techniques is investigated.

The research group hosts researchers from a wide variety of fields, from physics, biochemistry, artificial intelligence to various medical disciplines. This interdisciplinary environment is an excellent launching platform for novel technologies into clinical practice - from bench to bedside. Furthermore, it is an excellent launching platform for your career in science and industry.
