Utrecht University School of Economics (U.S.E.) has a vacancy for an Assistant Professor with expertise in Economics. The assistant professor would join the Applied Economics section. Research in the Applied Economics section focuses on topics in labour and social protection, health, education, housing, demography, and development economics. 60% of the time of the position is allocated to teaching activities and 40% to research.

Candidates are expected to teach in the Bachelor’s and Master’s programs of the School. The assistant professor will take care of qualitatively good teaching in accordance with the academic and departmental guidelines. The assistant professor will coordinate and teach courses - and supervise theses - at bachelor's and master's level offered by U.S.E.’s Applied Economics section. Teaching is in English. Candidates who can teach quantitative courses in Statistics, Econometrics, and Applied Data Science, but also candidates with expertise in Public Economics, are encouraged to apply.

The assistant professor gets 40% research time through the U.S.E. Research Institute. The institute stimulates collaboration with researchers from other disciplines and research activities that address societally relevant issues. Connections to research themes at U.S.E. (future of work, entrepreneurship, sustainability and economic development, sustainable finance) and to the Utrecht University Strategic Themes (Institutions for Open Societies and/or Pathways to Sustainability and/or Dynamics of Youth) are highly appreciated.

Requirements

The successful candidate is expected to have knowledge and skills in teaching Economics, and to contribute to the research program of the U.S.E. Research Institute. More specifically:
  • a PhD degree in economics and related disciplines;
  • a strong potential in research as can be demonstrated among others by either a strong job market paper or publications and citations in international recognised journals;
  • relevant knowledge of teaching in either Statistics, Econometrics, and Applied Data Science or Economics of the Public Sector;
  • teaching experience in an international academic environment with the proven ability to inspire students from undergraduate to graduate levels;
  • strong communication and coordination skills;
  • strong command of spoken and written English.

Conditions of employment

We offer a temporary position (0.8 - 1.0 FTE) for 18 months in an international working environment. After positive evaluation, this can be turned into a permanent position. The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience - ranges between €3,974 and €5.439 (scale 11 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year.
