We are seeking an energetic and passionate researcher with experimental experience and knowledge in Compressible Fluid Dynamics, Thermodynamics and Internal Flows. A unique opportunity is available for an excellent and highly motivated individual to investigate the formation of a rarefaction shock wave (RSW) in molecularly complex fluids using an already operational novel shock tube, the ASTER.
The RSW is a new physical phenomenon in physics, which, once proven, will attract much interest in the fluid dynamics and physics community. It was first theoretically discovered by two illustrious physicsts: Wolfgang Bethe (Nobel prize) and, at the same time, Yakov Zeldovich.
The vacancy is in the field of experimental analysis of non-ideal compressible fluid dynamics (NICFD), an area in which the Propulsion and Power group is at the forefront of both fundamental and applied research. NICFD is very relevant also for many power and propulsion technologies, among which Organic Rankine Cycle power plants and heat pumps. At thermodynamic conditions close to saturation and in the proximity of the vapor-liquid critical point, organic vapor flows can display gas dynamics features that are inverse to those typical of common gas flows. The goal of our research is to experimentally prove the existence of rarefaction shock waves and, along with the highly accurate speed of sound measurements that shall be performed with the ASTER, define new physical models for the design of efficient components operating in non-ideal flow conditions for waste heat recovery applications. The successful applicant will team up with other members of the Propulsion and Power group engaged in similar research in the Aerospace Propulsion and Power lab.

Fixed-term contract: 2 years.
