We have a unique opportunity for a passionate PhD candidate to participate in a large research program on the role of cerebral vessels in the development of dementia.

Job description

As a Radiology PhD candidate, you are involved in the development and application of MRI scans, multi-photon imaging and analysis of cerebrospinal fluid, blood and histology to measure the function of the cerebral vessels and the blood-brain barrier. You do this pre-clinically in laboratory animal models for dementia, and in data we have from ongoing patient studies. You will be doing experiments in the lab, but also processdata with various image analysis programs. Additionally, you participate in national and international conferences, where you present your data through posters and oral presentations. This project is a collaboration between the Radiology department of the LUMC and the Biomedical engineering department of the Amsterdam UMC. You will be guided by Dr. Louise van der Weerd and Dr. Eric Bakker.

Requirements

·         You have obtained your MSc degree in the field of biomedical engineering, biomedicine or equivalent;

·         Hands-on experience with MRI or other imaging techniques is a plus, but not required;

·         You have a FELASA accreditation or are willing to obtain this in the short term;

·         Furthermore, you can demonstrate your willingness to learn new lab and programming skills;

·         Your oral and writing communication skills in English are at a high scientific level;

·         It is important that you are enthusiastic and curious;

·         You have an excellent team spirit;

·         Lastly, accurate and independent work are second nature to you and you possess a strong sense of responsibility.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 4 years.

You will be given an employment contract for the production of a PhD thesis for the duration of the program with a maximum of four years. The salary amounts to € 2,789 gross per month in the first year, up to a maximum of € 3,536 in the last year with fulltime employment (scale Pro, CLA UMC).

You will be working at the C.J. Gorter MRI Center, where we develop new MRI techniques (both hardware and software) and apply them in medical research. People with a diverse background work at our centrum, that is to say researchers with a technical as well as a medical, psychological and neuroscience pre-education. Moreover, about half of the group comes from abroad. Our research group is characterized by an open atmosphere and good collaboration. We help each other in the implementation of preclinical, clinical and technical research.
