We are looking for a highly motivated Candidate who has proven interest and wants to work on a research project linking changing patterns of extreme weather to financial risks for the Netherlands. The project will be conducted in close collaboration with, and partially on site at, the Dutch central Bank (DNB). In general, we are interested in how climate change and correspondingly changing (extreme) weather patterns in the Netherlands will affect the value of (portfolios of) financial assets. The candidate will therefore conduct a series of at least four research projects in which we develop models to link (extreme) weather risks to asset prices for real estate, bank loans, and insurance policies. A final project will then translates the findings to practical stress tests and derive policy implications for supervision and financial stability. The candidate will work with large, proprietary datasets and in close collaboration with practitioners, implying that working papers and policy briefs are also part of the expected output in this project.
We offer a dynamic and challenging job in an internationally oriented organisation. The Candidate will be part of an international network of top universities and renowned scholars within the field. FIN and MILE have strong collaborations with other institutes and departments at Maastricht University and elsewhere. DNB is a front runner in climate risk and financial supervision within and beyond the ECB-group and international networks of central banks. Next to PhD education at the Graduate School of Business and Economics (GSBE) the candidate is expected to contribute to teaching activities at the department, taking max. 10% of her/his time. Another 10% is allocated to collaboration in ongoing DNB research to ensure a smooth integration of the work in DNB going concern.
Eligible candidates must have successfully completed a (preferably 2-year (120 ECTS)) Master’s degree (MSc or MPhil) in (Quantitative) Economics, Econometrics, Computational social science or a related area (before September 2023) and have an excellent command of English.
Fixed-term contract: 4 years.
