We are looking for an experimental hydrologist who will focus on rivers and deltas that are characterized by rapid socio-economic development.

Job description

The Assistant Professor in urbanising rivers and deltas will build the empirical basis to address some typical issues such as flooding, effect of urbanisation on hydrological processes, droughts, salt intrusion, and subsidence.

Within this topic, the successful candidate is given the opportunity to develop an own research line, complementing ongoing global-change-related research at Delft University of Technology.

The key job responsibilities of a successful candidate for this Assistant Professorship include:

  • Research: Delivering high quality, internationally leading research leading to improved and innovative observation methods, ideally combining different sources of information (in situ, remote sensing, models) and aiming at improved management of water resources. (Co-)supervising PhD and MSc students is an intrinsic part of the job, as well as disseminating research outcomes, among others via internationally leading journals and conferences.
  • Education: Contributing to the organization and teaching of relevant courses in the BSc programmes of Civil Engineering and Applied Earth Sciences and the Environmental Engineering MSc programme. This includes the opportunity to introduce new content and teaching methods matching the candidate’s expertise and interests in the recently renewed MSc programme. Preparing, supervising and assessing of BSc and MSc student projects is part of the position too.
  • Valorization: Initiating projects and obtaining funding for new research and/or education projects. We encourage proactive engagement with both private and government sectors, i.e. industry, business and community partners for societal impact.
  • Organization: Contributing to organizational and administrative activities and committees within the Department of Water Management and the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences.

We are seeking a highly motivated and qualified colleague to join our team as an experimental hydrologist. The ideal candidate will focus on rivers and/or deltas that are characterized by rapid socio-economic development.

To be considered for this position, we expect you to:

  • Hold a PhD in a relevant area of science or engineering such as Water Management, Civil or Rural Engineering, Hydrology, Environmental and/or Earth Science, and Applied Physics;
  • Demonstrate a proven ability to deliver high-quality research as evidenced by their publication record;
  • Possess a good understanding of the higher education environment, including diversity and inclusion values;
  • Have the capacity to communicate effectively with peers, students, and stakeholders.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 6 years.

This position is offered as an Academic Career Track position (0.8 – 1.0 FTE). During the Academic Career Track, we expect you to grow towards an Associate Professor position within a maximum of eight years, for which a position will be available. With other Academic Career Track colleagues, you will participate in the Academic Career Track Development programme, where you are offered ample opportunities to develop yourself in the areas of Education, Research, Societal Impact & Innovation, and Leadership & Organisation.

You will regularly discuss your development and results with senior staff based on a personalized development and performance criteria agreed upon at the start of your Academic Career Track. You will start with a temporary contract that will be converted to a permanent contract no later than 12 -18 months after a positive evaluation, based on continuous confidence in your development potential and fit in the organisation.

Inspiring, excellent education is our central aim. We expect you to obtain a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) within three years if you have less than five years of teaching experience. This is provided by the TU Delft UTQ programme as part of the Academic Career Track Development programme.

TU Delft sets high standards for the English competency of the teaching staff. The TU Delft offers training to improve English competency. If you do not speak Dutch, we offer courses to learn the Dutch language within three years.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. The salary for an assistant professor position is min. €3.807 to max. €5.922 per month gross (salary scale 11-12).
Besides the salary you also receive an annual holiday payment of 8% and an end of year bonus payment of 8.3%. Furthermore, TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged and you can work partly from home.
