The Advanced Sub-Surface Energy Technology (ASSET) program has recently started and we are looking for PhD candidates.

Job description

In this research project we propose to utilize an Operator-Based Linearization (OBL) approach to multiscale representation of the multicomponent multiphase flow in subsurface reservoirs.

The advantage is that a conventional two-stage upscaling approach which includes multiphase flow and compositional effects reconstruction (either using transport coefficient or non-equilibrium phase behaviour) can be replaced by a uniform reconstruction of the convective operators.

These operators are represented as multi-dimensional tables and can be directly used in OBL-based simulators (e.g., DARTS or GEOS) or processed as pseudo-functions in conventional simulators.

For generating operators in OBL approach, we propose the utilization of a Machine Learning (ML) technique to account for particular heterogeneity patterns and other parameters (e.g., upstream and downstream pressure and composition) when training operators for proxy modelling.

The developed proxy technique will be combined with Discrete Well Affinity (DiWA) model developed for reservoir dynamics forecasts. This approach allows for accurate and robust data assimilation with a limited number of degrees of freedom representing reservoir parameters.
