As an Assistant Professor of English and American Literature and Culture, you will join a diverse group of dedicated scholars, help shape the field of English and American Studies, and flourish in a friendly and vibrant academic community.

You will be based in the English and American Literature and Culture capacity group and  expected to collaborate closely with its team members. You will teach and co-teach a broad variety of introductory and more advanced courses in the BA programmes in American Studies (majority of the teaching) and in English Language and Culture. 

You may also be asked to teach in our minors and relevant Bachelor's and Master's programmes within the Faculty of Arts, such as the BA in Arts and Culture Studies or the MA in Literary Studies and the MA in Transatlantic Studies. In addition, you will supervise students, participate in educational support activities such as tutoring, and contribute actively to the development of our curriculum. You can play a role in building bridges between various research areas and teaching programmes within and beyond the department of Modern Languages and Cultures.

Your research will be embedded in the Radboud Institute for Culture & History (RICH). You will participate in RICH research groups and conduct disciplinary and inter- or transdisciplinary research, publish in relevant academic journals, supervise PhD projects, and build international networks with academics and societal partners. Furthermore you will seek external funding and be active in public engagement activities. 

We are specifically looking for a colleague who is specialised in intercultural encounters in the colonial and/or post-colonial Anglophone world. We expect you to contribute in a meaningful way to the development of one and ideally several of the following growth areas (listed alphabetically): environmental humanities; indigenous studies; migration and diaspora studies; minority literatures and cultures; postcolonial studies; transatlantic relations.

In addition to the above, you may be asked to do your share of administrative responsibilities. You will spend about 60% of your time on teaching and administration, and 40% on research. 

• You hold a PhD degree in English and/or American literary and/or cultural studies.
• You have a proven, strong affinity with at least one but preferably several of the research areas listed above. 
• You have an outstanding track record of international high-profile scholarly publications, and are able to or have the ambition to attract external research funding.
• You have robust experience in teaching at both the Bachelor's and Master's level. Furthermore, you can help develop and consolidate the teaching programmes in English and American literature, as well as relevant MA programmes. 
• You have experience with outreach activities.
• You are a native or near-native speaker of English.
• You have a formal university teaching qualification (UTQ), or are committed to obtaining one within two years.(*)
• If Dutch is not your mother tongue, you should willing to learn Dutch and attain level B2 after one year and level C1 in the following year.(*)
• You are an excellent, proactive team player who can collaborate with colleagues from different disciplines and various institutions.
• You have a proven ability to work in an inter- and/or transdisciplinary setting.

(*) For both the UTQ and Dutch language qualifications, we provide the necessary infrastructure and resources to acquire them.

Fixed-term contract: 18 months, with a perspective of permanent employment after positive evaluation.

• It concerns an employment for 0.8 FTE.
• The gross monthly salary amounts to a minimum of €3,974 and a maximum of €5,439 based on a 38-hour working week, depending on previous education and number of years of relevant work experience (salary scale 11).
• You will receive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
• It concerns a temporary employment for 18 months, with a perspective of permanent employment after positive evaluation
