Job description

To manage respiratory-induced tumor motion during radiotherapy in the thoracic and abdominal region, patients are often instructed to repeatedly hold their breath for short periods.

In this project, we reduce respiratory motion during radiotherapy by non-invasive mechanical ventilation supported breathing control.

About your role
Your main task comprises the evaluation of the efficacy of the various breathing control strategies that should lead to maximal reduction of organ motion.

Motion and organ position variations are visualized on MR images acquired during application of the various strategies. By registering these images to treatment planning CT scans, the dosimetric effect to surrounding healthy tissues will be calculated and compared.

Requirements

  • You have a relevant Master's degree, e.g. (bio)physics (medical/applied), technical medicine, or comparable.
  • You are an enthusiastic and highly motivated researcher who looks forward to working in a lively research group with multi-disciplinary and (inter)national collaborations.
  • You preferably have knowledge of (medical) imaging and programming skills.
  • You are able to work both autonomously and to act as a team with colleague researchers.
  • Therefore, you have good communication skills. Fluently spoken and written English language skills are required.

  • We offer a contract for 1.5 years, with a possible outlook on a PhD position in the same research line.
  • Salary according to scale 10: € 3,230 to € 5,088 gross for full-time employment (depending on education and experience).

You will be working at the department of Radiation Oncology of the Amsterdam UMC (locations AMC and VUmc). All our treatment machines are equipped with state-of-the-art imaging devices, and more than half of the machines support novel online adaptive procedures with linac-integrated MRI or Cone Beam CT.

The medical physics team, of which you will be part, aspires to be leading in the field of radiotherapy research. Research fields include (online) adaptive image-guided radiotherapy, brachytherapy and hyperthermia.
