Job description

The Faculty of Law (https://www.rug.nl/rechten/) of the University of Groningen is a modern, (inter)nationally oriented institution which builds on a longstanding tradition of more than four centuries. The faculty has the ambition to measure itself with the best law faculties in Europe. It offers several (inter)national Bachelor and Master programmes and with 5.000 students and almost 500 staff members, the faculty forms a vibrant community.

The European and Economic Law department of the University of Groningen is built around the first chair of European law in the Netherlands. The department strives for the highest level of research and education in all aspects of European law. The aim is to provide students of the Faculty of Law with a complete overview of European Union law. The emphasis is on the relationship between European law and the national and international legal systems. Within the framework of the research programme ‘Protecting European Citizens and Market Participants’, staff of the European and Economic Law department have built up a strong reputation for publishing in national and international top journals.

We currently have two positions for Assistant Professor of European Law. One of these positions includes teaching in a number of Dutch language courses and could also be turned into a Lecturers position if a qualified applicant does not yet hold a PhD degree.

Requirements

In addition to a number of basic requirements set by the University of Groningen, such as excellent social and communication skills, presentation skills, coaching skills and a results-oriented attitude, we are looking for candidates who have:

• general knowledge of the key dimensions of European Law. On this basis (s)he will participate in the various courses of the department, both as a lecturer and a coordinator and both at Bachelor and Master level
• specialised knowledge in one or more specific aspects of European law.

For a position as Assistant Professor we also ask for:

• research expertise and interests that lie in the area of European law
• a finished PhD in Law, with a specialisation in European Law, and a willingness to attract external research funding
• a good track record in research in European Law, and an emerging national and international network.

Participating in management forms part of the tasks. We aim for committed colleagues that are willing to become part of the Faculty’s community and to move close enough to Groningen to make that work. For non-native speakers, a willingness to learn Dutch is required. For all candidates, mastering the English language in speaking and writing is essential.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 12 months.

We offer positions as Assistant Professor (UD)/Lecturer in European Law, starting on 1 September 2023 for an initial period of 1 year, but with the aim of becoming a long-term member of the European and Economic Law group. Appointment as a Lecturer is negotiable only in relation to teaching that mainly takes place in the Dutch language courses and only on a temporary basis.

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:

• a salary based on qualifications and experience of between € 3,974 (salary scale 11) and € 6,181 (salary scale 12) gross per month for a full time Assistant Professor position and € 2,960 with a maximum of € 4,670 (salary scale10) for a Lecturer position
• a holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income
• an 8.3% year-end bonus
• participation in a pension scheme for employees
• an appointment will be made for an initial fixed term period of 12 months, with the possibility for a permanent appointment upon positive evaluation.

Preferred date of entry into employment is 1 September 2023
