Job description

For the ERC research project Conspiratorial Memory: Cultures of Suspicion in Post-Socialist Europe, The Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis, and the Department of Literary Studies and Linguistics at the University of Amsterdam, we are currently looking for an enthusiastic and independent student-assistant.

What are you going to do?
In your role as assistant, you will provide support for the ERC-funded research project Conspiratorial Memory: Cultures of Suspicion in Post-Socialist Europe. The aims of the project are 1) to determine to what extent Central and East European conspiracy cultures derive their interpretive logic and emotive force from narratives about the socialist past; and 2) to reveal the modes and media by which cultural imaginations of conspiracy circulate within and across national borders. The project zooms in on conspiracy culture from Poland, Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus regarding three transnational events that are at the center of current international tensions. Tasks and responsibilities:

The assistant will
  • maintain the project website and social media accounts;
  • assist the team with project publicity;
  • provide administrative support for the project's conferences, workshops and other events;
  • assist team members with the collection of research materials;
  • assist with the preparation of publications (e.g. formatting, adjusting reference systems, compiling bibliographies, making index term lists);
  • provide administrative assistance to the project leader (including financial management and reporting).

Requirements

You are well-organized and proactive. You are interested in contemporary Central and East European culture and media, and their relevance to current political debates. In addition, you have a social and cooperative attitude, and you thrive in a team setting.

Your experience and profile:

The successful applicant
  • is a student at a Dutch University until at least the Summer of 2024;
  • is an MA or BA student in the Humanities or Social Sciences. In the case of a BA student, the candidate has completed at least 60 EC of their Bachelor's program by 1 September 2023.
  • has experience with organizational and administrative work;
  • has excellent written and verbal communication skills in English;
  • has a high-level of proficiency in/understanding of at least two of the following languages: Polish, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Russian.
  • has demonstrable IT and social media skills;

Conditions of employment

We offer a temporary employment contract for a period of 1 year with a probationary period of two months. Preferred starting date is 01 September 2023. The employment contract is for 7,6 hours a week.

The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week and relevant experience, ranges between € 2402 to € 2611. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
