Job description
Geosciences play a vital role in addressing sophisticated environmental and societal challenges and are integral to transdisciplinary approaches for achieving sustainable living environments and enhancing the resilience of our society. We are committed to solving wicked global problems and addressing key sustainable development goals, in particular, Climate Action; Affordable and Clean Energy; Sustainable Cities and Communities by developing solutions for disaster resilience, sustainable mining, and energy transition. This has been translated in a series of recent initiatives, such as the Centre for Disaster Resilience (CDR) and the UT Climate Centre. In this framework, we are seeking a new member of the team to join us as Assistant Professor in Transdisciplinary Approaches in Geosciences for Sustainable Solutions.
You will develop innovative tools and approaches, and a transdisciplinary research direction within the ambitions of the Faculty, University of Twente, and the Netherlands sector of Earth and Environmental Sciences. You will also work on establishing and maintaining positive partnerships with partners in the geoscience field. This will involve working with policymakers, industry, academic institutions, NGOs, and other relevant organizations to promote sustainable practices in geosciences by using/applying citizen science, co-creation and co-production of knowledge methodologies with innovative and effective technologies (e.g. The DISC: Design and Interactive Space for Co-creating). You will build capacity in the geoscience community to promote sustainable practices and shape a generation of responsible and aware geoscientists. This may involve developing courses, training programs, workshops, and other educational initiatives in collaboration with our E-Learning Specialists and promoting the adoption of sustainable geoscience practices within the geoscience community, working with partners to develop and implement policies, guidelines, and standard processes. You will also supervise PhD candidates and MSc students including a PhD researcher directly linked to their position, and you will publish their results in scientific journals and open data platforms and cultivate a transdisciplinary approach with students in our educational programs.

Department
The Centre for Disaster Resilience (CDR), within the Faculty for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), focuses on a synergetic and common effort to increase well-being and global sustainable growth by significantly decreasing disaster risk. Please see the following links: CDR and ITC.
The CDR is committed to providing a working environment where everyone is valued, respected and supported to progress. Our priority is to ensure that no one is disadvantaged based on their ethnicity, gender, culture, disability, LGBTIQA+ identities, family and caring responsibilities, age, or religion. We encourage everyone who meets the selection criteria and shares the CDR’s values to apply.
The Department of Urban and Regional Planning and Geo-Information Management (PGM) carries out multi-disciplinary scientific research, education and capacity development activities that are passionate about developing, applying and analysing geo-information, Earth observation and spatiotemporal analytical tools in spatial planning, land administration and governance processes.
The department of Applied Earth Sciences (AES) combines Earth science knowledge with geospatial modelling and sophisticated earth observation, to increase our understanding of Earth systems and their interaction with society in space and time. We combine insights on hazards with information on exposure and vulnerability, to model and supervise risk to human societies, and inform actions to reduce risk and increase resilience in long-term planning, for early warning and disaster response, and in the context of post-disaster recovery and reconstruction.
