Do you want to improve learning and investigate societal relevant topics such as diversity and well-being? If so, we invite you to apply for the position as assistant professor within our team. You will be designing and conducting health professions education research within the research group 'Selection and Assessment; diversity, well-being and performance'.
Medical schools encounter multifaceted challenges in promoting diversity, well-being, and optimal performance among their students and residents. The prevalence of mental distress among students and healthcare professionals is high and the student cohorts and (future) healthcare professionals do not represent the diversity of the society they will serve. iMERR investigates selection and assessment processes with a focus on their impact on diversity, well-being, and academic/clinical performance. By investigating the effectiveness and equity of these processes, this research line aims to identify potential biases, barriers, and opportunities for improvement in health professions education and training. Our research covers the whole educational trajectory: from selection of pre-university candidates for health professions education programs to assessment in residency programs, including performance-based assessment.
This position will allow you to further develop yourself in a wide range of quantitative and qualitative research methods and to collaborate with researchers from a variety of backgrounds, including education, clinical practice, psychology and sociology as well as education professionals associated with various health professions education programmes. You can build on previous and ongoing research on well-being, diversity and academic performance related to selection and assessment. You will (co)supervise junior researchers and have the opportunity to build your own research line within this theme. For this, you will apply for research grants in which you will be supported by the experienced researchers within the institute. Your main focus is research which eventually contributes to solving actual educational challenges, but we also encourage you to translate your research findings into educational innovations. Occasionally, you will provide consultancy services for evidence-informed teaching and educational research, both inside and outside your own research field.
Erasmus MC (University Medical Center Rotterdam)
The position of Assistant Professor is offered to a researcher with a doctoral degree (PhD) in the social sciences in a field relevant to selection/assessment and/or diversity, or well-being. Excellent research skills are supported by publications in international journals, preferably also during some years as a postdoctoral researcher. If you are a talented post-doc who has the potential to grow into the assistant professor level within a few years, we also encourage you to apply.
Key skills you will use and further develop are designing and conducting quantitative and qualitative research leading to scientific publications; acquiring external funds for research projects; supervising junior researchers and (PhD) students; presenting and translating research findings to professionals in the field and to the general public; contributing to educational innovations in health professions education programs. Experience with grant writing is a plus. Proficiency in the Dutch language is also a plus.
Conditions of employment
We offer you a challenging position within the largest University Medical Centre (UMC) in the Netherlands with high ambitions in healthcare, education and research.
- In prospect of permanent employment as Assistant Professor, you will start in a temporary position as Assistant Professor or Post-doc, depending on your level of relevant experience. The duration of the temporary employment has a maximum of 3 years, but can be less depending on your preferences and level of experience.
- The gross monthly salary amounts a maximum of € 6.986,- (scale 12) for Assistant Professor or a maximum of € 6.156,- (scale 11) for a post-doc, depending on your level of relevant experience and based on a full-time working week of 36 hours. The terms of employment are in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement for University Medical Centers (CAO UMC).

The Institute of Medical Education Research Rotterdam (iMERR) is an institute for research in health professions education and is part of the Erasmus MC University Medical Center Rotterdam. It encompasses the full spectrum, from fundamental research aiming to gain new insights to research whose results translate directly into concrete applications and innovations. iMERR’s research team consists of a full professor Innovation of Medical Education, who is leading the research group selection & assessment, an associate professor and an assistant professor leading the research line focused on clinical reasoning & patient safety, the newly appointed assistant professor, and about 1 post-doc and 9 PhD students/junior researchers from various backgrounds (Medicine, Health Sciences, Epidemiology/Statistics, Psychology, Sociology).
