Job description

The Data2Game project is carried out in collaboration between the University of Twente, Tilburg University, Thales/T-Xchange and Brandweer (Fire brigade) Twente.

The current PhD vacancy concerns subproject 3 Game based learning: assessment and instructional interventions. Within this subproject, the PhD candidate will be working on the automatic assessment of decision making skills, knowledge level, and emotional state of the game player and on designing and evaluating the effects of instructional interventions (scenario adaptations, adapting the level of difficulty, presenting additional information etc.) that are triggered by the automatic assessment of the player.

The PhD candidate is expected to work in an interdisciplinary team with two other PhD candidates, who will be working on subprojects 1 (adaptive text generation) and 2 (player modelling). Vacancies for the two other PhD positions can be found on the vacancies websites of Tilburg University (subproject 2) and the University of Twente (subproject 1).

In addition, the PhD candidate will be collaborating closely with the project team from Thales/T-Xchange. This will involve monthly meetings on location at Thales.

Requirements

For the position, we seek a candidate with a background in a relevant discipline, such as educational science or (cognitive) psychology.

The PhD candidate has a (Research) Master’s degree in one of these areas, a strong interest in doing research, excellent professional communication and team working skills, and a good command of Dutch and English. Furthermore, it is considered to be an advantage when the candidate has good programming skills.

Conditions of employment

You will have a full-time (38 hours a week) contract spanning a period of 4 years. The monthly salary ranges from € 2.191,00 (1st year) to € 2.801,00 (4th year), plus holiday allowance (8%) and end-of-year bonus (8.3%). PhD candidates have a full status as an employee at the University of Twente, including pension and health care benefits. Terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labor Agreement for Universities (CAO).
