Within the Mesoscale Chemical Systems group several positions for PhD students are available on the topic of Mesoscale materials with applications in chemistry. These positions will be funded via an ERC Advanced Grant awarded to prof. Gardeniers, for a project entitled "Chemical Reaction Engineering by Additive Manufacturing of Mesocale MetaMaterials" (acronym: CREAM4). The aim of the project is to design 3D metamaterials, and fabricate them via additive manufacturing principles (3D printing). The materials will be (surface) functionalized with nanoparticles via microfluidic techniques, in order to make then suitable for applications in (photo)catalysis, (photo)electrochemistry and (phase) separation. Several applications will be tested.
The candidate PhD students will become part of a team of 8 junior and senior researchers working on this topic. This team is embedded in an international research group with a strong collaborative atmosphere. As part of the PhD program, the PhD students will have the opportunity for continuous education, within the Twente Graduate School, and actively contribute to the group's teaching program, e.g. by supervision of BSc an MSc assignments.
You have (or are finalizing) a Master’s degree, preferably with distinction (or international equivalent) in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or Nanotechnology. Applicants with other backgrounds will not be considered.
For one of the positions theoretical knowledge of and practical experience with the interaction of light with (granular) matter (including nanoparticles) is requested.
You should be able to work as a member of a research team, therefore it is requested that you provide explicit proof of your collaborative performance in previous research work, by providing letters of recommendation from previous supervisors.
You are able to review and engage with interdisciplinary studies and are driven by curiosity. You have excellent analysis skills and an analytical mind-set, as well as excellent communication skills, both spoken and written. English language proficiency is a must and a written test will be part of the interview procedure.
The University of Twente offers a stimulating work environment in an area of applied, forefront research. You will have an employment contract for the duration of 4 years and can participate in all employee benefits the UT offers. The gross monthly salary starts with € 2222,- in the first year and increases to € 2840,- in the fourth year of your employment. Additionally, the University of Twente provides excellent facilities for professional and personal development, a holiday allowance (amount to 8%) and an end of year bonus of 8.3%.
Information and application
For further information you can contact Prof. Han Gardeniers. (email@example.com). Candidates are invited to upload their application before 30 September 2017 at the UT web address, including a motivation letter describing why you should be considered for the offered positions, references (including recommendation letters), and CV (including obtained degrees and publications) to the application button below.
