Job description

The University of Twente (UT) is seeking two lecturers (fulltime) in Applied Mathematics (AM).

We are looking for enthusiastic lecturers in (applied) mathematics who are passionate about guiding young students, both in applied mathematics and in other disciplines ranging from Industrial Design Engineering to Applied Physics, in mastering mathematical subjects such as calculus and linear algebra as taught in most technical programmes. We expect that the lecturers will be able to teach in the bachelor Applied Mathematics in subjects close to her (research) interest. Supervision of BSc and MSc students may be part of the job. Most bachelor and all master programmes at the UT are English taught.

Requirements

We offer a permanent position and a temporary position for 4-year.

For the permanent position: You have a PhD degree or similar in (Applied) Mathematics or related and you have ample experience in teaching mathematics.

For the 4-year position: You have an MSc degree or similar in (Applied) Mathematics or related and you have some experience in teaching mathematics. Examples of candidates that we have in mind are recent graduates, high school teachers with first degree teaching qualification, but also researchers who want to gain experience in teaching.

For both positions: Experience in teaching at high school level (Dutch: VWO) counts as an advantage, but is not required. As a teacher, your prime interest is in enhancing the learning experience of the students. You have an open mind towards modern views on teaching and learning. To facilitate the professional development and quality of teaching, all lecturers are requested to obtain the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) within two years of their first appointment. We expect that you will shape your professional development as a lecturer thereafter.

Both positions are available from August 1st 2017. Interviews are scheduled for July 13th or, if needed, mid August.

Conditions of employment

We offer a lively and dynamic working environment with passionate colleagues both in teaching and support. The positions will be at the lecturer level, with an initial contract for one year. After a positive evaluation, the contract will be for an indefinite period (permanent position) and three years (4-year position) respectively.

For the 4-year position: If you have a strong record in research, then a small portion of the position devoted to research is negotiable. 

The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labor Agreement for Universities (CAO). Depending on the relevant background and experience, the gross monthly salary on a full-time basis ranges from € 2588 € to € 5861 per month. Employees are also entitled to a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.3 %.

About the department of Applied Mathematics
The mission of AM is to guide students in their development as an academic and towards the choice for a subsequent MSc programme and thus prepare them for an international career. The department of Applied Mathematics is part of the faculty Electrical Engineering Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) and is responsible for the BSc and MSc programmes in Applied Mathematics and all service teaching in mathematics at the UT. A major task of the department is the service teaching: the department teaches almost all mathematics courses university wide. The department actively participates in and contributes to the Dutch Master Programme in Mathematics (MasterMath) and in several local and national graduate programs. The ambition of the department is to attract students from all over the globe and to create a truly international education environment for students and staff. The language of tuition is English and intercultural competence forms an explicit part of the curriculum and of the final qualifications. Our goal is to further develop this and to disseminate the unique character of the program thus increasing the inflow of both national and international students.The faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science  comprises three disciplines that shape Information and Communication Technology. The faculty offers five bachelor’s and eight master’s programmes.
