Job description

You carry out research in satellite radar interferometry (InSAR). The research will focus on developing and demonstrating methodologies to identify InSAR deformation patterns with machine learning algorithms. InSAR techniques have been successfully applied to many natural/anthropogenic hazards (e.g. sinkholes and bridge failures), but always ‘after-the-fact’. It appears that many of the hazards exhibit precursory deformation patterns, which could serve as a tell-tale for impending hazards. Identifying and classifying those patterns in the data therefore is of importance to prevent the catastrophic events and the associated casualties and damage. In this research, you will design and implement algorithms to improve InSAR parameter estimation given auxiliary/contextual information. You will develop, validate and apply machine learning algorithms to systematically detect patterns in the data which are indicative of impending hazards. You will emphasize the efficiency of the algorithms for timeliness and large data volumes. You tune your work to find solutions for radar information acquisition problems emerging within ITC’s research and consulting projects. Part of your time (< 10 %) will be devoted to teach, assist and supervise MSc students.
