Set up in 2001, Stichting HIV Monitoring (SHM) contributes to improving the quality of HIV medical care in the Netherlands. SHM works together with the 26 HIV treatment centres in the Netherlands to collect highquality, coded data from around 19,000 people living with HIV who are under medical care. Based on analyses of these nationwide data, we publish an annual monitoring report that summarises essential findings regarding the course of the infection in adults and children, the efficacy of antiretroviral treatment and associated side effects, non-infectious co-morbidity and co-infection with viral hepatitis B and C. Our monitoring reports form an important benchmark for the quality of HIV care in the Netherlands. Furthermore, through participation in international studies, we also make an important contribution to the knowledge about the course of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the impact of treatment in Europe and the rest of the world. For our data analysis, reporting and research unit, we are looking to recruit a medical doctor with epidemiology training and experience or a clinical epidemiologist.

Key responsibilities:

• Carry out independent analyses for SHM’s annual monitoring report and describe the results of these analyses in an accessible and clinically relevant manner in various chapters of the report;
• Independently conduct clinical epidemiological and, possibly, methodological research; present the findings of this research at national and international conferences, and publish the findings in peerreviewed scientific journals;
• Contribute to the assessment of research proposals submitted to SHM by HIV treatment centres, and suggest methodological and structural improvements to these proposals. Where necessary, provide support in the analyses of the data required for these research proposals;
• Contribute to the assessment of research proposals submitted to SHM by international research collaborations in which SHM participates, and suggest methodological and structural improvements to these proposals;
• Advise and support SHM’s data management and data monitoring unit in the standardisation of data processing for the purpose of data analysis;
• Advise and support SHM’s data management and data monitoring unit in further improving data quality control and contribute to expanding and improving the data collection protocols;
• Contribute to the development and use of analytical models for clinical observational research;
• Supervise junior researchers and PhD students who make use of SHM’s database. 

• A university degree in medicine/biomedical sciences and/or clinical epidemiology;
• Medical doctor/epidemiologist with PhD and proven extensive experience in processing and analysing datasets obtained from longitudinal observational (population) cohorts;
• Demonstrated affinity with, and knowledge of, HIV, viral hepatitis and/or non-communicable and ageingrelated diseases;
• Demonstrated experience in independently carrying out longitudinal data analysis, causal modelling and survival analysis;
• Experience in using SAS (preferred), R, and/or Stata, and possibly also C/C++ or Matlab;
• Excellent command of English and Dutch, both spoken and written;
• Proven ability/track record of medical-scientific writing and presentation in both Dutch and English;
• Excellent communication and presentation skills, in both Dutch and English;
• A pro-active attitude, willing to take initiative;
• A team player.

Position within the organisation

The medical doctor/clinical epidemiologist will form part of the data analysis, reporting and research unit, which works closely with both the data unit and the communications department. All staff in the data analysis, reporting and research unit carry out the tasks listed above, and, in addition, have individualspecific expertise and affinity in the field of epidemiology, statistics, mathematical modelling of HIV and modelling of transmission networks. Data analysis, reporting and research staff are primarily accountable to the director of SHM.

This is a dynamic position for 40 hours a week, with varied responsibilities in a scientific environment. The salary is commensurate with the required qualifications and experience. SHM’s offices are located in Amsterdam, very close to the Academic Medical Center of Amsterdam, and are easy to reach by public transport or car.
