Job description

We invite applications for a 3-year postdoc position within the EU Horizon2020 Innovation Action ‘PREVENTOMICS: Empowering consumers to PREVENT diet-related diseases through OMICS sciences’. PREVENTOMICS builds a new paradigm in preventive personalised nutrition based on the potential of omics, especially metabolomics, accessible for everyone. The novelty relies on a new integration of genetic, nutritional and psychological factors and the application of state of the art metabolomics technologies and computational modelling of the metabolome, translating this information into personalized dietetic advice for the user, levering on ICT technologies.

The successful candidate is expected to select relevant biomarkers for health outcomes, initiate and maintain contact with participating cohort studies and biobanks, analyse complex data, generate prediction models that include (omics) biomarkers and other predictors, and write scientific publications. There are also possibilities to teach or gain teaching experience in the bachelor and master programmes at Maastricht University (e.g. Biomedical Sciences, Epidemiology, Systems Biology).

Requirements

Our ideal candidate:

  • has a PhD degree in molecular epidemiology, nutrition, computational biology, bioinformatics, or a related field;

  • is fluent in R and/or MATLAB;

  • has experience with omics data analysis;

  • works in a highly independent and self-motivated manner;

  • has a personality characterized by collaboration, vision, and ambition;

  • is fluent in the English language.

The salary is competitive, and will be set in scale 10 or 11, depending on qualifications and work experience of the collective labour agreement of the Dutch Universities (expected minimum € 2640,- and maximum € 4.852) for a full-time job (38 hours/week). The Maastricht Centre for Systems Biology (MaCSBio) is one of the youngest research centres of Maastricht University. It is an interfaculty research institute which is part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE), the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience (FPN), and the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Science (FHML). MaCSBio strives to perform cutting edge research in the interdisciplinary field of Systems Biology, combining biology and state-of-art technology for the acquisition of biological data with advanced mathematical and computational methods. In the research line ‘Systems Medicine of Chronic Diseases’ we focus on the understanding and development of personalized preventive strategies for obesity-related chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease or cancer. The research is carried out in collaboration with the ‘Molecular Epidemiology of Chronic Diseases’ group at the Dept. of Epidemiology at Maastricht University.
