Job description

A PhD candidate in global economic and social history who will develop and execute a research project on Food Trade in Sub-Saharan Africa, focussing on the 20th century transition from food autarky to large scale food imports. He/she will also participate in the research program of the Rural and Environmental History Group at Wageningen University and enrol in the PhD education programmes of the N.W. Posthumus Institute and the Wageningen School of Social Sciences. He/she will be able to develop his/her personal research CV and will co-lecture one or two courses in economic, global and/or environmental history to social science students.

Requirements

You are an ambitious and enthusiastic scholar, and a team player devoted to research and education in a highly international and interdisciplinary academic environment.

You also have:
  • a MA/MSc in history, economics or any other social science with a clear historical character.
  • quantitative and qualitative research skills.
  • an interest in societal issues such as the causes and consequences of global inequality.
  • an interest in teaching (international) students in a variety of programmes.
  • good organizational skills.
  • fluency in English.
  • strong motivation to develop your own research project.
  • ability to work both independently and in small teams.

Conditions of employment

In principle this is a 48 month PhD position. We offer you a temporary contract for 18 months which will be extended with 30 months if you perform well. Salary will increase from € 2,266 gross per month in the first year up to € 2,972 in the last year, based on full-time employment (38 hours a week). Next to a variety of secundairy labour conditions, we offer a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-the-year bonus of 8.3% of your annual salary.
