Job description:The Laboratory for Geo-Information at Wageningen University (NL) is offering a Post-Doc position to perform research on (1) concepts, tools and implementation for independent validation, regional calibration and use of global biomass products derived from remote sensing and (2) the use of global biomass products for assessing impacts of human-induced changes on tropical forest biomass. The work is partially linked with the ESA Biomass CCI project (
cci.esa.int/biomass) and builds upon previous work at the GRS group (
www.wageningenur.nl/grsbiomass) and the recently completed Globbiomass project (
globbiomass.org/). The focus of the work of the post-doc is to compile and process forest biomass plot data, maintain the database, use the data for global and regional biomass map validation. Part of scientific work relates to quantifying uncertainties of biomass estimates, and develop methods to incorporate it into accuracy assessments of biomass estimates from space and how such uncertainties relate to the use of the data for national-scale monitoring and integration with national forest inventories (i.e. related to REDD+). There is room for the post-doc to develop an own research idea/project within that scope.
Resources and supervision:The research is conducted mainly at the Laboratory for Geo-Information at Wageningen University (NL) under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Martin Herold, and in collaboration with international partners. The successful candidate is expected to engage in international exchange and meetings, engage in proposal writing and attracting research funding, and in the supervision of MSc and PhD students working on related topics. The position is for 36 months.
