Job description

Lipid metabolism is tightly regulated both at the cellular as well as whole-organism level. This regulation ensures that the level of lipids does not increase to toxic levels and that they are available at sufficient amounts for processes requiring them. Disruption of this balance is at the center of several pathological conditions in humans, most notably fatty liver and cardiovascular disease.

Our group is broadly interested in the transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation of lipid and energy metabolism (e.g Zelcer et al., Science 2009; Zelcer et al. MCB 2014; Sharpe et al. TIBS 2014; Loregger et al. MCB 2015; Nelson et al. Circ Res 2016; Loregger et al. ATVB 2017; van Loon et al. ATVB 2018). Using functional genetic approaches we have recently identified several novel genes which play a previously unrecognized role in key lipid-dependent cellular processes. As such, the central goal of this VICI-supported project is to elucidate the role of these genes in lipid metabolism in vitro at the mechanistic and cellular level (using e.g. RNAseq, metabolomics, mass spectrometry, functional assays), as well as to evaluate their contribution to development of metabolic disease in vivo in mice.

Requirements

As part of this VICI project we have developed several new conditional mouse models of the identified genes that are implicated in lipid and energy metabolism. We are looking for a highly-motivated scientist with a PhD in Medical Biology, Life Sciences, Biochemistry or a related field with a proven track record and affinity for conducting (metabolic) studies in mice. Experience with animal experiments and holding an article 9 certificate (or equivalent animal handling diploma) is an advantage. The candidate should have good command of oral and written English. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work within an international research group are essential.
