Job description

As an assistant professor you will be part of the finance group in the department of Economics and Business Economics of the Nijmegen School of Management (NSM). The position includes both research and teaching tasks.

You will primarily be expected to conduct high-quality research in finance, preferably in behavioural, experimental finance, corporate finance, household finance and/or financial decision making. Expertise in behavioural/experimental methods will be an advantage. This position is expected to result in a series of high-quality publications in finance, economics and/or economic psychology.

You will further be expected to provide high-quality courses in finance at the Bachelor’s and Master’s levels (e.g. courses in advanced corporate finance) and to supervise Bachelor’s and Master’s theses.

Requirements

  • you have, or are close to completion of, a PhD degree in business, economics, psychology/decision making or a related field;
  • you are highly motivated and have the potential to build a record of excellence in both research and teaching in behavioural/experimental finance, corporate finance, household finance, financial decision making or a related field;
  • an excellent record in academic teaching, as evidenced by good teaching evaluations, and a willingness to obtain the Junior University Teaching Certificate within the first 4 years of the contract;
  • with regard to research, you should have working papers or potential revise-and-resubmits, or have published publications in leading international journals in the field of finance, economics, psychology or a related field;
  • experience with the acquisition of research funds is valued as well;
  • excellent English language skills in oral and written communication.

Conditions of employment

  • employment: 0.8 - 1.0 FTE
  • the maximum gross monthly salary will range between € 3.545 and € 4.852 on a full-time basis, depending on qualifications and experience (scale 11)
  • in addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus
  • duration of the contract: six years (tenure track). Regular start date is 1 August 2019, but the position can be filled as soon as 1 January 2019
  • applicants from abroad moving to the Netherlands may qualify for a special tax relief, by which 30% of their salary is tax free

Nijmegen School of Management
The Nijmegen School of Management is an academic centre of research and higher learning. It has seven focus areas: Business Administration, Public Administration, Political Science, Economics, Social and Political Sciences of the Environment, Human Geography, and Spatial Planning. The NSM strives for a multidisciplinary approach whenever possible. Altogether, the faculty employs 220 full-time staff, of whom 75% are academics.
 
The NSM awards Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in the above-mentioned seven fields of study, which are organised in the NSM’s educational institute. The educational programme is based on a system of small-scale teaching and provides a stimulating learning environment with an emphasis on the development of academic skills. The Nijmegen School of Management has about 4,200 students. The NSM’s research activities are governed by the Institute for Management Research (IMR), which has the equivalent of 80 full-time staff members. It focuses on fundamental and applied research on the development, design and effectiveness of the public and private structures that regulate, govern or manage human interaction.
 
The department of Economics and Business Economics consists of four chair groups: Economic Theory and Policy, International Economics, Business Economics, and Finance. The department is responsible for the development and quality of the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in economics, as well as for courses in economics in other educational programmes of the NSM. What sets the Nijmegen curriculum in Economics apart is that it is characterised by a multidisciplinary approach, whereby in addition to the economics discipline, inspiration is sought from other areas.
