Job description

Postdoctoral position in gravitational wave astronomy
Nikhef is the national institute for subatomic physics in The Netherlands. At Nikhef, approximately 175 physicists and 75 technical staff members work together in an open and international scientific environment. Together, they perform theoretical and experimental research in the fields of particle- and astroparticle physics. Among the research collaborations Nikhef participates in are the ATLAS, LHCb and ALICE experiments at CERN, the KM3NeT neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean, the VIRGO interferometer in Pisa, the Xenon1T dark matter experiment in Gran Sasso and the Pierre Auger cosmic rays observatory in Argentina. Nikhef also hosts well staffed theoretical physics and detector R&D groups. Nikhef itself is a collaboration between 5 major Dutch universities and the Dutch Foundation for Scientific Research NWO.

The gravitational physics division at Nikhef, invites applications for a postdoctoral research position in gravitational wave astronomy, with emphasis on searches for coalescing binary neutron stars and black holes with LIGO and Virgo. The successful candidate will work with Dr. Sarah Caudill. The data analysis effort at Nikhef currently involves 2 senior scientists (Dr. Caudill and Prof. Van Den Broeck), 3 postdocs, and 3 PhD students; the group is expected to expand significantly in the next few years. In addition to data analysts, the gravitational physics division at Nikhef (which is a member of the Virgo Collaboration) and its collaborators in The Netherlands consists of astronomers and astrophysicists, theorists, and instrumentalists. There is also vibrant collaboration with individuals and groups around the world.
