Job description

The Faculty of Humanities of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) is looking for an Assistant Professor in Digital Humanities who will bring to the position a relevant and innovative research agenda in the area of Digital Humanities and will be able to teach within the programs of Media Studies. You will be especially interested in the critical study, development and application of digital research methods, techniques and tools for the purpose of historical humanities scholarship.

In the study of information and media (broadly understood as books, artworks, audio-visual media and digital media), digital research materials are evolving in spectacular fashion, leading to new research affordances that require a critical approach to how digital media structure the reuse and interpretation of born-digital and historical data. The study of Digital Humanities within Media Studies concerns both contemporary and historical periods, and also focuses on the cultural and methodological implications of digital research.

You will be at home in more than one sub-discipline, demonstrated by experience in working with digitized data collections of different types, in historically-oriented research. In addition, you are able to combine the teaching of digital humanities with critical reflection on the implications of their use in studying historical and contemporary cultures. As our successful candidate you are expected to bring together researchers working in Digital Humanities, Media Studies and other humanities disciplines and aim to acquire funding for collaborations. You will carry out your research within the Amsterdam Institute for Humanities Research (AIHR) or the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC), and are expected to make an active contribution to the CREATE project at the Amsterdam Centre for Cultural Heritage and Identity, one of the University of Amsterdam’s research priority areas.
