Job description

The assistant or associate professor we are looking for will strengthen the focus on Machine and Equipment Design in the field of Transport and/or Production Engineering and Logistics. You will work on novel approaches for design and modelling of handling equipment functioning in logistic chains. This involves complex multi-machine systems facing increasing process demands such as higher capacities and zero downtime while saving resources and minimizing costs. Your research contributes to the mission of Delft University of Technology: combining science, design and engineering in a socially responsible manner. You will supervise PhD and MSc and BSc students, acquire external funding, teach and develop new courses at undergraduate and graduate levels in Mechanical Engineering, and undertake managerial tasks as required. You will actively collaborate with other research institutes and industry.

Requirements

The scope of relevant topics of research for this position includes, but is not limited to, large-scale dynamic structures, integrated mechanical systems design, topology optimisation, design optimization, advanced modelling techniques, (production) machine design, granular materials, biomass/bulk solids handling, novel materials, applying machine learning for design, simulation based design, kinematics and dynamics, virtual and rapid prototyping, self-adaptability, metamodeling.
We welcome applicants that have a clear vision on how their research contributes to the field of Machine and Equipment Design, and the research in the Transport Engineering and Logistics section. Candidates should have a PhD and a background in mechanical, industrial or maritime engineering or another relevant field, are active researchers with a multidisciplinary mindset, and are enthusiastic team players. Having experience in university level teaching and applying for research funding would be appreciated.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: Tenure track.

At the start of the tenure-track you will be appointed as Assistant Professor for the duration of six years. Section leader, department leaders and you will agree upon expected performance and (soft) skills. You will receive formal feedback on performance and skills during annual assessment meetings and the mid-term evaluation. If the performance and skills are evaluated positively at the end of the tenure track, you will be appointed in a permanent Assistant Professor position.
