Machine learning, and in particular deep learning has become a driving force behind many recent breakthroughs in artificial intelligence. From speech recognition, image analysis, natural language understanding, machine translation, query and answering systems, protein folding, and even playing GO, deep learning is breaking records. These exciting developments have not gone unnoticed to industry either: Google, Facebook, IBM, Qualcomm, Yahoo, Microsoft, Bosch, Uber and so on all have large teams of researchers working in machine / deep learning. AMLAB, QUVA Lab and Delta Lab at IvI are currently very active research labs in machine / deep learning, totaling around 40 researchers in this area.
Our new tenure tracker is expected to contribute to fundamental research in machine learning, and in particular in geometric methods in machine learning. Geometry is one of the most successful mathematical frameworks used in many of the natural sciences and we see an increasing role in ML as well. Examples include the role of groups in deep learning, such as equivariant convolutional networks, applications of geometry in causality and the role of geometry in unsupervised learning methods, such as generative adversarial networks and variational autoencoders. Applications are expected in e.g. medical imaging, computer vision, self-driving cars, causal inference, supervised and unsupervised learning, transfer learning, and reinforcement learning.
What do we require of you?
Your research interests should fall within the general area of machine learning with a keen interest in theory and/or geometry. You must hold a doctorate in Computer Science or a related area. A strong track record in research is essential, as demonstrated by independent scientific publications in peer reviewed journals, as well as research interest and expertise in the area of machine learning. You should be able to obtain research funding in a competitive environment. In addition, you must have a proven track record of teaching abilities as well as the ability to supervise BSc, MSc and PhD students. At least two years of postdoc experience is expected but not strictly necessary. International research experience is also preferred.
We offer a temporary appointment with a tenure track agreement for the duration of five years. You will be offered a permanent position after a positive assessment and evaluation.
The type of appointment is negotiable and depends on experience and scientific profile of the selected candidate. The Committee will make an offer pending the vacancy and your experience and track record.
The full-time gross monthly salary of the assistant professor position (UD 2/UD 1) will range from €3,637 to €5,656 (salary scale 11/12), effective 1 February 2019, depending on qualifications and on the number of years of professional experience. The annual salary will be increased by an 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end-of-year bonus, under the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (Cao). A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants.

The tenure track position at the assistant professor level will be within the Amsterdam Machine Learning Lab (AMLAB) at the Institute for Informatics (IvI) of the Faculty of Sciences (FNWI). AMLAB is led by Prof. Max Welling and also includes Dr Joris Mooij, Dr Zeynep Akata, Dr Herke van Hoof as well as around 30 PhDs and postdocs. Other groups doing related deep learning research within IvI are the Intelligent Sensory Information Systems (ISIS) group (led by Prof. Cees Snoek), the Computer Vision (CV) group led by Prof. Theo Gevers, and the Information and Language Systems (ILPS) group (led by Prof. Maarten de Rijke). Affiliated labs are the Qualcomm-UVA deep learning & computer vision lab (QUVA) with 12 PhD students and postdocs and the Bosch-UvA DELTA Lab with 10 PhD students and postdocs.
