Job description

Ultrasound is widely recognized as the most frequently used medical imaging technology, as it is harmless and relatively cheap, provides real time 2D and (increasingly) 3D imaging, and can be used at the bed-side or in virtually any clinical setting. But much better things are to come. New developments in ultrasound imaging hardware, image reconstruction and molecular contrast agents are enabling completely new ranges of diagnostics and therapy in the cardiovascular and neurological field with ultrasound. This offers excellent opportunities to tackle the major existing and evolving healthcare threats, such as heart failure, arrhythmias, atherosclerosis, neurological disorders and cancer. We are developing new imaging modalities for 4D cardiovascular function and flow, transducers to enable new 3D applications, molecular targeted contrast agents for imaging and therapy and functional ultrasound imaging of the brain. The close cooperation between Erasmus MC and TU Delft in these fields provides a unique basis for this groundbreaking work.

We are looking for highly capable researcher with a Master  degree in Biomedical Engineering, Applied Physics or similar. Experience with biomedical imaging techniques, especially ultrasound or photo acoustics is highly desirable. Our candidate is highly motivated, adventurous and creative, and is willing to push boundaries. Our candidate has an excellent command of the English language, with excellent professional communication and team working skills. We expect the candidate to keep good contact with collaborating companies such as Philips, Bracco, Vermon and Oldelft. There is a unique high-impact collaboration between Erasmus MC (medical, ultrasound imaging) and TU Delft (acoustics, electronics). The research will be performed mainly at the AWI group at the TU Delft.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 4 years.

The position is in the Department of Imaging Physics (ImPhys), Our department performs cutting-edge research spanning the range from understanding the basic principles underlying imaging technology to automated image analysis to developing new imaging systems.
The Acoustical Wavefield Imaging (AWI) section aims at obtaining high-resolution images via inversion of acoustic measurements. Important application areas are earth exploration, non-destructive testing and medical diagnosis. In the field of medical ultrasound, the section has a strong collaboration with the Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam. The section houses a unique workshop for designing and manufacturing ultrasonic transducers that are used to test innovative medical imaging concepts.
