Job description

Due to the approaching departure of the current chair holder, the board of the Jozef M.A. Janssen Foundation invites applications for the endowed chair of Ancient Egyptian Religion. This chair was established in 1987 for the study of the ‘History of the Antique Religions, particularly that of Ancient Egypt' at the University of Nijmegen, as Radboud University was then called. In recent years, the chair holder closely collaborated with the Institute of Eastern Christian Studies (IECS/IVOC), which is based at the Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies, linking the founding discipline of the Chair, i.e. Egyptian religions, with the study of the Coptic language and the history and culture of Coptic Christianity. For both fields, the chair holder cooperates with scholars from the Faculty of Arts.
It is this double focus on both ancient religions/Egyptian religions and the Coptic tradition that the board of the foundation would like to see continued in the years to come. Suitable candidates who work in related fields of ancient religious history will also be considered.

The board of the Jozef M.A. Janssen Foundation is therefore looking for a candidate who:

  • will contribute to the Faculty’s teaching and research in the field of ancient religions, particularly Egyptian religions;
  • will contribute to the Faculty’s teaching and research in the field of Coptic language and cultural history or in the other languages of ancient Egypt;
  • will also want to initiate and supervise PhD research in one or more of these areas;
  • will be willing to contribute to the further development of the library collection in this field;
  • will want to contribute to activities organised in these areas in Nijmegen, by the Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies, IVOC and the Faculty of Arts.
