Job description

This research project will be focused on risk factors and clinical neurological consequences of migraine. Migraine is an episodic disorder which is characterized by a severe headache and may be accompanied by nausea and/or light and sound sensitivity. It is one of the most common complaints encountered by neurologists in clinical practice. Despite the considerable burden on the patient as well as on healthcare systems, many aspects of the etiology and clinical consequences of migraine remain unknown. Especially risk factors in the field of lifestyle, circulating blood markers, and neuroimaging remain unexplored, but may substantially improve our understanding of the disease. Also, the risks of clinical neurological brain disease such as stroke or dementia following migraine remain elusive.

The PhD candidate will be working in the dynamic environment of the prospective population-based Rotterdam Study, and will be involved in data-collection related to migraine, lifestyle, and neuroimaging. The candidate will analyze the collected data in light of the specific research questions, and disseminate the findings through scientific articles and conference presentations. As part of the PhD-trajectory, the candidate will enter a Master of Science programme in Health Sciences at the Netherlands Institute of Health Sciences (Nihes).
