The Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) has the following vacancy: Postdoc Characterization and modelling of mechanical properties of composites under extreme environmental conditions (V35.3840)
in the group Mechanics of Materials of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Job description

We are looking for a full-time Postdoc in the area of the characterization and modelling of the mechanical properties of fiber reinforced composite materials at the department of Mechanical Engineering. The position is within in the Mechanics of Materials group, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Netherlands. It is a 2-year position intended to start from June 1st 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Job description

The objective of this research is to develop a new predictive modelling framework that allows the simulation of the mechanical performance of thermoplastic composites, in short-term as well as in long-term loading (creep, fatigue), taking into account the influence of harsh environmental conditions (salt water, low temperature, high pressure).

Modelling will be based on a micromechanical approach that builds on numerical tools previously developed in our groups. You will perform characterization and validation experiments on unfilled resin and unidirectional composites. Initially, only quasi static behavior will be studied. Later in the project, the experiments are extended to fatigue tests and experiments on samples that have been exposed to relevant environmental conditions. Final goal is the development of a multi-physics micro-mechanical model that captures the observed response and can be used in a design process.
