Job description

The Korteweg-de Vries Institute for Mathematics (KdVI) is inviting applications for a full professor in Mathematical Statistics.

We are seeking a full professor in Statistics whose research connects to the emerging fields of machine learning and artificial intelligence and their application. You will actively engage in collaboration with other research groups within the faculty of science focussing on these themes. In the near future the KdVI statistics group will have one or more open positions at associate / assistant professor level that will strengthen the research focus. Your research vision will be an important aspect for the hiring process.

Many important activities in mathematical statistics are organised on a national level in The Netherlands. We are actively involved in these national efforts, for instance through the national research cluster STAR, one of the four mathematics clusters funded by the national science foundation NWO, and various national seminar series such as the Van Dantzig seminar, The Bayes Club and the Thematic Seminar. We also contribute to the national programme Mastermath by offering courses on statistics on a master and PhD level.

You are expected to

  • shape our statistics research programme, to publish in high-level international journals, to present at leading conferences, and to supervise PhD students;
  • with your research group, carry responsibility for and to take part in teaching efforts of our programmes in statistics, statistics and financial mathematics, forensic science, including supervision of undergraduate and graduate students, and to teach in the national master programme;
  • strengthen the coherence within the statistics programme, between the other research programmes at the KdVI and/or in the faculty, and to take part in the research activities of the STAR cluster;
  • be able to acquire external funding;
  • foster collaborations with other institutes and/or companies, and to contribute to (joint) research projects;
  • contribute to valorisation of mathematical research.

Requirements

You are expected to

  • have a strong research vision, and a track record of engagement within your department and across the wider mathematical or scientific community;
  • have an excellent track record of publications and research grant acquisition;

  • be fluent in English, both written and spoken;
  • be able to teach in Dutch within two years after appointment.

Conditions of employment

The starting date of the appointment is flexible but preferably 1 September 2019. Although the vacancy is for a full professor, the position is also open for promising candidates on an associate professorship (UHD) level. In that case a tenure track position leading to a full professorship will be offered. The gross monthly salary of the Associate professor position (UHD) will be in accordance with the University regulations for academic personnel and will range from €5,039 up to a maximum of €6,738 (salary scale 13/14). The gross monthly salary of the Full professor will be in accordance with the University regulations for academic personnel and will range from €5,582 up to a maximum of €8,127 (salary scale HL2).

At any appointment level, the salary is based on a full-time appointment and depending on qualifications, expertise and on the number of years of professional experience. The total salary includes an additional 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end-of-year bonus, under the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants.

With over 5,000 employees, 30,000 students and a budget of more than 600 million euros, the University of Amsterdam (UvA) is an intellectual hub within the Netherlands. Teaching and research at the UvA are conducted within seven faculties: Humanities, Social and Behavioural Sciences, Economics and Business, Law, Science, Medicine and Dentistry. Housed on four city campuses in or near the heart of Amsterdam, where disciplines come together and interact, the faculties have close links with thousands of researchers and hundreds of institutions at home and abroad.

The UvA’s students and employees are independent thinkers, competent rebels who dare to question dogmas and aren’t satisfied with easy answers and standard solutions. Department

Korteweg-de Vries Institute for Mathematics

The Korteweg-de Vries Institute for Mathematics (KdVI) is the mathematical research institute of the Faculty of Science. The KdV Institute is responsible for mathematical research within our University. It also provides the lecturers and instructors for the mathematics teaching within the Science faculty (and some teaching outside this faculty), for which the teaching institutes carry the formal responsibilities.

The KdVI statistics group covers a variety of topics in statistics. This ranges from theoretical work on the performance and design of procedures in high-dimensional, or nonparametric models, to more applied work in areas such as forensic statistics or climate science. The statistics group operates within the stochastics programme, which coordinates the Grativation Programme NETWORKS, and in which topics such as probability theory, stochastic analysis, mathematical finance and queuing theory are covered.

Within the Faculty of Science there are interesting related research groups. In particular in the area of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning there are closely related activities within the Institute Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC) and within the Informatics Institute (IvI). An interesting development is the recent launching of the Innovation Center for Artificial Intelligence (ICAI), which promotes public-private partnerships in the general area of AI.
