Job description

The internship or placement is a compulsory part of the curriculum of the MA International Relations and an optional component of the BA International Relations and International Organization. The internship supervisor is responsible for guiding students before, during and after the internship. She or he should inform and guide students in the search for an internship, verify whether an internship meets the applicable criteria, communicate with students during the internship and assess the student at the end of the internship with individual meetings. Good coaching skills are an absolute requirement for this position.

The internship supervisor is also responsible for the administrative handling of the individual internship process, the correspondence and the contact with the organization where a student conducts her/his internship. It is important that you are accurate, and that you are able to set the right priorities in which you ensure that everything is realized within the deadlines. The supervision of internships happens throughout the year and is not limited to a set period.

All internship supervisors are responsible for organizing information meetings for BA and MA students. Additionally, internship supervisors are also responsible for the quality of the internship process.

Requirements

• good communication and writing skills
• excellent coaching skills
• experience in guiding international students
• hands-on mentality
• organizational skills
• familiarity with the work field of International Relations in its broader sense
• master degree, preferably in International Relations or adjoining fields (e.g. social sciences)
• excellent command of English (C1/C2 level); Dutch is an asset but not required
• proficiency in the use of MS Word (templates) and MS Excel.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 48 months.

The University of Groningen offers a salary depending on qualifications and work experience starting from a minimum of € 2,709 to a maximum of € 4,274 (salary scale 10 Dutch Universities) gross per month according to the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, based on a full-time appointment, excluding 8% holiday pay and 8.3% end-of-year gratification and participation in a pension scheme for employees. The position is 0.2 FTE, which is the equivalent of 8 hours per week on average for four years.

Date of entry into employment: as soon as possible.

The Department of International Relations and International Organization (IRIO) is committed to top tier research combined with high quality education. This commitment to excellence is apparent at both the undergraduate, graduate and PhD levels. IRIO, with over 50 staff members, provides high quality, interdisciplinary and international bachelor and master degree programmes. Students and staff study international relations and the role of international organizations in an integrated manner from historical, political, economic and legal angles. The Department provides an international working environment for an increasing number of foreign students and research staff. The bachelor and master degree programmes are taught in English. There are currently about 1,000 students registered for IRIO programmes. Additionally, the Department is responsible for the Erasmus Mundus master degree programme in International Humanitarian Action, and the research master programme Modern History and International Relations. Research in the Department of IRIO is organised under the responsibility of the five chairs of the Department, respectively: International Security, International Political Economy, European Integration, History and Theory of International Relations, and Globalisation Studies and Humanitarian Action.
