The Department of the Built Environment invites applications for a position as Assistant Professor in the Chair of Structural Design of Concrete Structures within the unit Structural Design. The assistant professorship is a tenure track position, related to 3D printing of concrete.

Job description

Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is a leading research university specializing in engineering science and technology. Following the strategic goals, the faculty of the Built Environment aims to educating future generations of students, to meet today's societal challenges. The development and implementation of the Industry 4.0 is one of these major challenges in the architecture, engineering and construction industry to improve on construction productivity and sustainability. It is for this reason that the chair of Structural Design of Concrete Structures develops robotic driven digital concrete technologies with a focus on 3D Concrete Printing (3DCP). The research aims to achieve a data driven additive manufacturing process, embedment of reinforcement strategies and design optimization.

Driven by groundbreaking research activities by the TU/e, the first proto-types of bridges, houses and structural components have recently been successfully 3D printed. However, little is still known about the influence of the process parameters and conditions on the structural performance during the process itself and in the subsequent serviceability phase. We look forward to further investigating these topics, in order to advance the knowledge about the optimization of printed structures in terms of its weight distribution and material use, and enable the development of novel, energy-friendly building materials suitable for 3DCP, and the printing of structures with tailor-made (thermal, hygral, electrical) properties.

As an assistant professor, you will contribute to achieving the educational and research objectives of the chair of Structural Design of Concrete Structures and support in research on 3D Concrete Printing. You will participate in the teaching of courses and the supervision of MSc and PhD students, both design and research oriented. Your research focuses on mechanistic numerical shape and topology optimization tools for 3D printing of civil engineering structures in concrete with complex shapes, using as little material as possible and embedding the conditions that come along with the printability. You will collaborate closely with a colleague with a research domain in experimental research on additive manufacturing from a materials perspective.  You will be involved in the writing of research proposals and the acquisition of external funds to strengthen current and new research initiatives in the chair. You will pursue strategic internal and external collaborations and publish your research results in high-quality scientific journals.
