NIOD is looking for a senior researcher Holocaust and Genocide Studies (with a professorial appointment at the University of Amsterdam).
Besides an appointment as senior researcher at NIOD, the candidate will occupy the chair of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Amsterdam (one day per week).
The position demands participation in the research and educational activities of the Genocide Studies program, at the NIOD and the Faculty, PhD-supervision as well as the institute's other activities, with a keen eye for societal outreach of the Chair in the Netherlands and abroad. The candidate should be able to play an innovative and inspiring role in the field of Holocaust and Genocide Studies and to attract external funding for research projects as well as young scholars. The candidate will participate in one of the research schools of the Amsterdam Institute for Humanities Research (AIHR), e.g. the Amsterdam School of Historical Studies (AHS; ash.uva.nl), the Amsterdam School for Heritage, Memory and Material Culture (AHM; ahm.uva.nl) or the Amsterdam School for Regional, Transnational and European Studies (ARTES; artes.uva.nl).
Teaching concerns Holocaust and Genocide Studies, with a focus on modern genocides, comparative genocide studies, and the dynamics of genocidal processes and mass violence. The NIOD staff coordinates the University of Amsterdam's (Contemporary History) Master's Program in Holocaust and Genocide Studies, a one-year program taught in English that each year attracts twenty or more students from around the world. The team also offers several electives, at the UvA as well as other universities, some at Bachelor level, in English and Dutch, and are furthermore involved in the training of teachers in secondary education.
Last but not least, the Genocide Studies team initiates and promotes lectures, film screenings, symposia, expert meetings, and international conferences under the auspices of the NIOD that draw the attention of scholars, students, and the interested public.
* Candidates are expected to possess good knowledge of the Dutch language (in word and spoken) within two years. Passing the state examination for Dutch as a Second Language, programme II (NT2-II), is a prerequisite for a permanent employment contract and for continuation of a temporary employment contract. The NIOD will be supportive of having the candidate follow an intensive course in Dutch at the Institute for Dutch language education (INTT: intt.uva.nl). If necessary, supplementary schooling in English will be arranged as well.
Fixed-term contract: tenure track, renewable based on performance evaluation.
This is a part-time position of 0,8 fte at the NIOD, which includes a chair at the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Amsterdam for a period of at least five years for one day per week. The candidate can only be appointed after the full procedure at the University of Amsterdam has been successfully completed and the Executive Board of the University has decided on a professorial appointment. The chair does not entail additional remuneration.
The NIOD offers an informal, internationally-oriented working environment with a great deal of room for individual initiative and responsibility. The salary for a full-time (38 hrs) position may vary between € 5.294 and € 7.401 per month gross (based on experience, scale 14 or 15, collective labor agreement Dutch Universities), excluding 8% holiday pay and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies (NIOD-KNAW) is an Academy research institute. The NIOD’s expertise lies in the dissemination of knowledge about the Second World War, the Holocaust and genocide. In addition to research, NIOD offers content-rich, intensive services. Both professionals and private individuals can approach NIOD for information or to consult its extensive collection.
