Job description

The Jheronimus Academy of Data Science has a vacancy for a researcher in the area of data science with the aim to support us in consolidating and extending our data science research and our teaching programs; which are characterized by their high-impact and high-relevance nature. The appointment is at Tilburg University. The candidate will be based at JADS, whereas the position is connected with the Department of Cognitive Science & Artificial Intelligence at Tilburg University.

 

The postdoc will be working closely with our academic staff on applied yet academic research questions in the realm of data science (ranging from machine learning, AI, personalization, statistics, to (Big) data engineering and processing). In addition, they will co-lecture, work in our entrepreneurial programs with various start-ups and scale-ups on AI and data science.

 

The position will include teaching sections in our educational graduate programs, international research collaborations, and participation in the intellectual community at JADS Mariënburg campus in ‘s-Hertogenbosch.

Requirements

  • We are looking for a data scientist (or a data engineer), with experience working with industry, e.g. should be able to understand applied computational methods as well as data science in business contexts such as supply chain analysis and management, process optimization, data-driven markets, etc.
  • A PhD in Data Science, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence,Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, or a related discipline;
  • Proven programming skills (e.g., in Python, R, Java)
  • Strong interest in applied research, and highly motivated
  • Ideally, experience in smart industry area, Industry 4.0, IoT etc.
  • A fast and learner, autonomous and creative, shows dedication and is  hard working;
  • Possess good communication capabilities and an efficient team worker;
  • Has good academic writing and presentation skills.
  • Speaks fluent English, both spoken and written. Knowledge of Dutch/German is a plus, but not necessary

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 1 year with possible extension.

  • A full-time position for two years. After a positive first year evaluation, you will be offered the second year. A 80% position is negotiable.
  • Depending on the candidate’s experience, the position will be ranked in the Dutch university job ranking system (UFO) as researcher 4 or 3. The starting gross salary for a full-time appointment is (minimally) €3389,- gross per month in scale 10, ( minimally € 47.296,- per year). Or € 3637,- in scale 11 up to (maximally) € 4274,-  gross per month (maximum € 59.647,- per year).
  • A holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% (annually).
  • Tilburg University is one of the best non-profit employers in the Netherlands and offers very good fringe benefits such as an options model for terms and conditions of employment and reimbursement of moving expenses, also including excellent technical infrastructure, savings schemes and excellent sport facilities. The collective labor agreement of the Dutch Universities applies.
  • Researchers from outside the Netherlands may qualify for a temporary tax-free allowance equal to 30% of their taxable salary. The University will apply for such an allowance on their behalf.
  • The University will provide assistance in finding suitable accommodation (for foreign employees).
  • The starting date of the position is as soon as possible, preferably by July 1st, 2019 or soon thereafter.
