Job description

To strengthen its senior staff, the Philosophy Department, specifically the section Philosophy and Public Affairs, invites applications for an Associate professor in Social and Political Philosophy.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a strong record of publications (books, as well as articles in prestigious international journals), experience with acquiring third party funding, a broad philosophical background, outlook and interests, and solid experience with teaching at both BA and MA level, as well as experience in supervising PhD students.

The section's research and teaching focuses on practical philosophy and its history. More specifically, the candidate is expected to have firm knowledge of the history of political and social philosophy; to have firm knowledge of the most relevant contemporary normative political and social philosophical approaches (analytic as well as continental); to have shown to be interested in interdisciplinary research; to be able to apply his/her philosophical knowledge to problems in contemporary societies and to be interested not only in academic but also in broader non-academic publications.

We welcome applications from candidates with research expertise in, and a broad command of, issues in social as well as political philosophy. We also require a systematic specialization in either social or political philosophy (preferably, but not necessarily, within one of the ASCA focus areas Globalisation & MigrationIdentitiesCultural and Social Critique, or the new UvA ‘Research Priority Area’ Human(e) AI).

The candidate is expected to take an active role in departmental activities, ranging from research seminars to board memberships and grant applications. Good social skills, a deeply collegial attitude, and ability and willingness to take up substantial administrative tasks are particularly welcome.

The research undertaken by the new associate professor will be part of the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA), sub-programme Philosophy and Public Affairs.

Requirements

Formal requirements are:

  • a PhD in social or political Philosophy;
  • teaching experience, preferably at various levels of university education;
  • verifiably broadly deployable and prepared to be deployed in several teaching programmes;
  • outstanding research skills, demonstrated by publications in international refereed academic journals and academic publishers;
  • fundraising experience, e.g. acquisition of research projects through government agencies or the private sector;
  • experience in supervising PhD research;
  • proven leadership qualities; experience in administration, organisation and coordination of university education and research;
  • enthusiasm, an interdisciplinary attitude, a strong team spirit and the ability to motivate team members;
  • flexibility, readiness to participate in interdisciplinary cooperation and multidisciplinary development (verifiably focused on collaboration with other disciplines);
  • excellent command of both Dutch and English; preferably international teaching experience. If Dutch is not the native language, an active and passive command should be acquired within two years of appointment (passing the state examination for Dutch as a Second Language (NT2), programme II, is a prerequisite for a permanent employment contract);
  • amenable to personal and professional development that focuses on broad deployability.

Conditions of employment

The initial appointment will be on a temporary basis for a period of two years with prospect on a permanent appointment. Subject to satisfactory performance, this temporary contract will be turned into a permanent contract.

The gross monthly salary will range from €5,039 (scale 13) to €6,738 (scale 14), based on a full-time appointment (38 hours a week) in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO NU).The appointment starts at the first of January or February 2020.
