Job description

Are you a cultural or media studies scholar with a broad range of interests and a global outlook? Does your research focus on visual or material culture? Are you an inspiring teacher who is motivated to contribute to teaching and research programmes that are beneficial to the cultural sector? And do you value collaboration across the boundaries of your own expertise, study programmes and lines of research? Then this might be the job for you.

Today's world requires critical thinkers, people who can define new directions for research and teaching that respond to the changes and challenges of our times. As an Assistant Professor of Arts and Culture Studies, you will join a diverse group of dedicated scholars, shape the field of arts and culture studies, and flourish in a friendly and vibrant academic community.

The Literary and Cultural Studies section at the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures is welcoming applications from specialists in visual, material or media studies who can solidify or complement our profile and strengths in research, teaching and societal impact. As an Assistant Professor, you will be part of a section with thirteen tenured staff, four non-tenured staff and fourteen PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers. Your research will be embedded in the Radboud Institute for Culture and History (RICH), where you will contribute to a research group of your choice. Because of the research directions we are developing, affinity with the field of environmental humanities, digital humanities, cultural policy, or tourism and cultural heritage studies would be an asset. You are a productive and active researcher who is developing research projects, writing, publishing and collaborating on themes that contribute to RICH’s mission. You will seek external funding and actively participate in public engagement activities. You will participate in working groups, committees and/or project groups within the department, programme or faculty.

About 60% of your working time will be devoted to teaching in English or Dutch. At the Bachelor's level, you will teach in the BA degree programmes in Arts and Culture Studies and other BA programmes such as the Faculty's minors. At the Master's degree level, you will similarly teach in and contribute to the Master's programmes in Arts and Culture Studies (e.g. the specialisations Tourism and Culture, Creative Industries, or Cultural Policy and the Business of Art) and in the Research Master's programme in Historical, Literary and Cultural Studies (e.g. the specialisation in Art and Visual Culture). You will supervise students writing their papers and theses, participate in educational support activities such as tutoring, and actively contribute to the development of the curriculum.

You will also take on management tasks within the study programmes, the department, or the research institute (e.g. memberships of programme committees or examination boards, or being the coordinator of a RICH research group).

Requirements

  • You are a well-rounded and innovative media or cultural studies scholar with a demonstrable interest in and experience with arts and culture studies. You have experience with visual and material analysis, medium studies and/or with working on non-Western art and culture.
  • You hold a PhD in cultural studies, arts and culture studies, media studies, or a similar field, studying modern and/or contemporary media, arts and culture, preferably from a global perspective.
  • You are a dedicated and ambitious researcher with a proven record of international, peer-reviewed publications; you have experience with grant applications or have feasible plans for them.
  • You are a team player, able to establish innovative collaborations with other members of the expertise group and beyond, in both research and teaching.
  • You are an inspiring lecturer, with an articulate teaching philosophy, and have several years of teaching experience at the BA and MA levels including thesis supervision, as well as stimulating ideas on curriculum development.
  • You have a university teaching qualification (UTQ/BKO) or an equivalent qualification, or are willing to obtain a UTQ within two years (*).
  • You have an interest in and experience with administrative tasks and management.
  • You are either in possession of a Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English C2 (or equivalent) or are committed to obtain it in the foreseeable future (*). If Dutch is not your mother tongue, you are willing to learn Dutch and obtain level B2 after 1 year and level C1 in the following year (*).

(*) We will provide the infrastructure and resources necessary to acquire these qualifications and certificates.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 1 jaar met uitzicht op een vast dienstverband.

  • It concerns an employment for 0.8 FTE.
  • The gross monthly salary amounts to a minimum of €4,332 and a maximum of €6,737 based on a 38-hour working week, depending on previous education and number of years of relevant work experience (salary scale 11 or 12).
  • You will receive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
  • It concerns a temporary employment for 1 year, with the possibility of a permanent employment.
  • You will be able to use our Dual Career and Family Care Services. Our Dual Career and Family Care Officer can assist you with family-related support, help your partner or spouse prepare for the local labour market, provide customized support in their search for employment and help your family settle in Nijmegen.
  • Working for us means getting extra days off. In case of full-time employment, you can choose between 30 or 41 days of annual leave instead of the legally allotted 20.
Work and science require good employment practices. This is reflected in Radboud University's primary and secondary employment conditions. You can make arrangements for the best possible work-life balance with flexible working hours, various leave arrangements and working from home. You are also able to compose part of your employment conditions yourself, for example, exchange income for extra leave days and receive a reimbursement for your sports subscription. And of course, we offer a good pension plan. You are given plenty of room and responsibility to develop your talents and realise your ambitions. Therefore, we provide various training and development schemes.
