Job description

Are you fascinated by cutting-edge molecular biology and next-generation sequencing (NGS) techniques? Join us in unravelling the complexities of bacterial gene regulation and pushing the frontiers of molecular biology!

Join us!
The DRNA lab focuses on understanding the rules of gene regulation in bacteria using innovative molecular biology and advanced NGS techniques. We aim to uncover how regulatory networks operate under different conditions, with an emphasis on RNA biology and stress response mechanisms. Our interdisciplinary team collaborates closely with bioinformaticians and experimental biologists to integrate data-driven and hypothesis-driven approaches.

Our lab is a part of the Microbiology theme at the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences in the Faculty of Science, University of Amsterdam. Our state-of-the-art facilities and supportive research community provide an ideal environment for ambitious researchers eager to make an impact.

What are you going to do?
You will
  • conduct molecular biology experiments such as DNA/RNA extraction and cloning;
  • perform cutting-edge next generation sequencing techniques;
  • help PhD students, postdocs, and other researchers to generate high-quality data for publication;
  • purchase and maintenance of laboratory equipment and consumables;
  • contribute to teaching experimental skills to students and interns.

Your experience and profile
You have/are
  • a Bachelor (HBO) or MSc degree in molecular biology, microbiology, or a related field;
  • experienced: hands-on experience with molecular biology techniques, preferably including NGS library preparation;
  • detail-oriented: very organized and precise in your work;
  • collaborative: able to work effectively with a diverse team/department;
  • communicative: proficient in English, with excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Our offer
We offer a temporary contract for 38 (1.0 FTE) hours a week, preferably starting on 1 June 2025 or later, for the duration of 12 months. An extension for 36 months subsequently follows if we assess your performance positive.

This is exclusive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.

Besides the salary and a vibrant and challenging environment at Science Park we offer you multiple fringe benefits:
  • 232 holiday hours per year (based on fulltime employment);
  • multiple courses to follow from our Teaching and Learning Centre;
  • a pension at ABP for which UvA pays two third part of the contribution;
  • the possibility to follow courses to learn Dutch;
