Job description

The Faculty of Humanities is looking for an enthusiastic and independent student-assistant to join the ERC Consolidator Grant project “Entangled Freedoms: Decolonial Modernisms as Transnational Relations of Resistance” led by Dr. Sanjukta Sunderason for the Department of Arts and Culture at the University of Amsterdam.

Come work with us
Entangled Freedoms is a transnational research project that studies how artists and cultural thinkers from the Global South interacted with – and intervened in – plural, contesting ideas of freedom during 20th-century decolonization and the Cold War. The project will house 2 PhD scholars and 3 Postdoctoral Scholars and will run between 2024-2029. It carries international collaborations and publication programmes, and will maintain a documentational project on 20th-century art, political thought and decolonization.

This is what you will be doing
As a student assistant, you will be responsible for assisting the project leader (PI) with the management of the project – this will include correspondence with project’s international associates, organization of project meetings, logistics for events and workshops held under the project, and updating the project website (where project members/associates will be contributing blogs, annotated bibliography, and image-essays etc).

As Student Assistant, you will also be welcome to develop your own research interests in dialogue with the project and will benefit from learning from the close research environment of the project team.

Tasks and responsibilities:
  • Assisting PI in project’s day to day administration, including accounting, organization of meetings;
  • Organizing project events (talks, seminars, workshops);
  • Updating the project website;
  • Assist PI in research documentational work where needed.

This is what we ask of you
  • You should have a BA and/or MA degree in humanities with a background in art and culture, literary and cultural studies/analysis. Candidates from the Social Sciences are also welcome but with a strong presence of cultural/artistic interests;
  • You should have computer skills, including excel and website management;
  • You should have skills in working with accounts;
  • You should be able to show interest in topics covered by the project and establish why you want to join it.

Students with backgrounds in cultural/intellectual/art histories or artistic research are particularly welcome.
You should be enthusiastic, intellectually engaged, and efficient – open to learning new skills and working with people in a team. Interest in the research scope of the project is an added quality, so candidates interested in themes of art and histories/archives of decolonization – and with experience of accounting and website work – are particularly welcome.

This is what we offer you
  • A temporary student-assistant contract for a maximum of 4 years, with a probationary period of two months. The employment contract is for 7.6 hours per week. The preferred starting date is 1 April 2025. PLEASE NOTE: Candidates must be enrolled at a Dutch university for the entire duration of the contract.
  • a position in which your initiative and input are highly appreciated;
  • an enthusiastic team that welcomes new colleagues;
  • an inspiring academic and international environment located in the heart of Amsterdam.

This is where you will be working
The Faculty of Humanities provides education and conducts research with a strong international profile in a large number of disciplines in de field of language and culture. Located in the heart of Amsterdam, the faculty maintains close ties with many cultural institutes in the capital city.

If you feel the profile fits you, and you are interested in the job, we look forward to receiving your application. You can apply by submitting your letter and CV via the link below. We will accept applications until April 10th, 2025. If you have any questions about the position or the department, please contact during office hours: Sanjukta Sunderason s.sunderason@uva.nl.
