Job description

Are you interested in developing and applying innovative quantitative methods to understand how environmental change is affecting ecosystems and/or human health? If so, come and join us to develop and apply new techniques to analyse environmental data and processes and support the development of sustainable solutions for current and future environmental challenges.

We are looking for an assistant or associate professor to strengthen research, education and management at the Department of Environmental Science. You will develop and apply innovative quantitative methods to improve our understanding of the impacts of anthropogenic pressures on ecosystems or human health and support the development of sustainable solutions for current and future environmental challenges. Your research scope may cover a wide range of quantitative modelling techniques for analysing environmental data and processes, including, for example, machine learning, multivariate analysis, geospatial analysis, regression analysis, numerical methods, Bayesian statistics and process-based modelling techniques. You are expected to develop and apply these novel quantitative methods within the context of one or more of the department’s research lines: human and ecological risk assessment, life-cycle assessment, biodiversity assessment and sustainability transition assessment.

You will strengthen the excellent international scientific profile of the Radboud Institute of Biological and Environmental Sciences (RIBES) and its central mission of contributing to mitigating ecosystem degradation and finding solutions to restore the natural environment. You will explore and establish collaborations within RIBES, the Faculty of Science, Radboud University and with other national and international institutes.

Further, you will contribute to the Bachelor's and Master's programmes in biology and environmental science, including the coordination and teaching of various courses and the further development and improvement of the curriculum. You will participate in general courses of the BSc or MSc curriculum, and you will be supervising BSc and MSc students and PhD candidates.

As an Assistant or Associate Professor, your duties will typically involve 40% research, 40% teaching and 20% management. This division may differ for assistant professors in the first 3 years of their appointment (60% research, 20% teaching and 20% management).

Requirements

The appointment will be at the assistant or associate professor level, depending on your career stage. The criteria below will be evaluated correspondingly.
  • You have completed a PhD in the field of environmental science, data science, statistics, quantitative ecology, quantitative chemistry or a closely related field, preferably followed by several years of research experience in the field.
  • You have strong quantitative skills in statistics/modelling and computer programming
  • You are passionate about teaching and have experience in the subject area, preferably evidenced by a university teaching qualification and/or teaching evaluations.
  • You are a good mentor for BSc and MSc students and PhD candidates.
  • You are able to attract research funding from various national (e.g. NWO, KNAW) and international (e.g. EU, ERC) grant-giving bodies and stakeholders.
  • You have strong communication skills and a proven ability to collaborate with scientists from different disciplines.
  • You have proven social, organisational and management skills and the willingness to take on managerial tasks within the department, institute and faculty.
  • You are committed to promoting diversity, equity and inclusion in academia.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: You will be appointed for an initial period of 18 months. Upon a positive performance evaluation at the end of this period, the contract may be converted into a permanent one.

  • It concerns an employment for 0.8 - 1.0 FTE.
  • Depending on your scientific track record and experience you will be appointed as an Assistant Professor or Associate Professor, potentially with career track criteria for future promotion.
  • For an Assistant Professor the gross monthly salary amounts to a minimum of €4,332 and a maximum of €6,737 based on a 38-hour working week, depending on previous education and number of years of relevant work experience (salary scale 11 or 12).
  • For an Associate Professor the gross monthly salary amounts to a minimum of €6,002 and a maximum of €8,025 based on a 38-hour working week, depending on previous education and number of years of relevant work experience (salary scale 13 or 14).
  • You will receive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
  • You will be appointed for an initial period of 18 months. Upon a positive performance evaluation at the end of this period, the contract may be converted into a permanent one.
  • You will be able to use our Dual Career and Family Care Services. Our Dual Career and Family Care Officer can assist you with family-related support, help your partner or spouse prepare for the local labour market, provide customized support in their search for employment and help your family settle in Nijmegen.
  • Working for us means getting extra days off. In case of full-time employment, you can choose between 29 or 41 days of annual leave instead of the legally allotted 20.
Work and science require good employment practices. This is reflected in Radboud University's primary and secondary employment conditions. You can make arrangements for the best possible work-life balance with flexible working hours, various leave arrangements and working from home. You are also able to compose part of your employment conditions yourself, for example, exchange income for extra leave days and receive a reimbursement for your sports subscription. And of course, we offer a good pension plan. You are given plenty of room and responsibility to develop your talents and realise your ambitions. Therefore, we provide various training and development schemes.

Employer

The mission of the Department of Environmental Science is to provide high-quality scientific knowledge that can help the world move towards greater sustainability. To achieve this, we aim to understand and predict the impact of anthropogenic pressures on ecosystems and humans from the landscape to the global scale and use the knowledge obtained to identify solutions for a more sustainable society.

The Department of Environmental Science is part of the Radboud Institute for Biological and Environmental Sciences (RIBES), Faculty of Science, Radboud University. RIBES, consisting of four departments (Ecology, Physiology, Microbiology, and Environmental Science), has the aim to perform world-leading research in order to understand the response of the natural environment to human impact. This fundamental research is cross-linked with innovative applications in both industry and society with a focus on mitigating ecosystem degradation and climate change and finding solutions to restore the natural environment. RIBES is nationally and internationally unique as its research encompasses three major groups of organisms (micro-organisms, plants and animals) and spans nearly all levels of biological organisation. We value a diverse workforce and strongly encourage candidates from non-traditional backgrounds and historically marginalised or underrepresented groups to apply.
