Tumor hypoxia is one of the reasons for poor response to radiotherapy in cervical cancer. Knowing the hypoxia status can help tailor the treatment to the individual patient. Unfortunately, to date there are no validated non-invasive methods to detect hypoxic regions within tumors that are also easy to implement in clinical practice. Previous studies have shown the potential of quantitative MRI (qMRI) techniques for this task. In your project, you will focus on the combination of state-of-the art qMRI techniques, such as diffusion and perfusion imaging. This will be developed and validated using a unique multicenter quantitative imaging data set.
Your research will be embedded in the Van der Heide group at the Department of Radiation Oncology of the Netherlands Cancer Institute. The research in our group centers around the use of MRI for radiotherapy. You will work together with other researchers in the group, radiation technicians and radiation oncologists, as well as with industry partners and you will participate in international consortia.
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic PhD student with a strong affinity for radiotherapy and MRI imaging. The candidate should have a master’s degree in physics, biomedical engineering or a related field. A background in MRI physics as part of the master program is recommended. Strong communication skills are required in this multidisciplinary project. Experience with programming, preferably in python, is appreciated.
Fixed-term contract: 4 years.
Your temporary employment will be for a period of 4 years. The gross salary per month for our PhD will range from € 3.355,- to a maximum of € 4.073,- according to the standard PhD scales. The terms of employment will be in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Hospitals. In addition you will receive a fixed end-of-year bonus (8,33%) and you will receive 8,33% holiday pay.
